About the Program:

The Global Restoration Initiative (Restoration) is part of the Forests Program at WRI and works to inform, enable and invest in action to restore vitality to degraded and deforested landscapes around the globe. Following commitments by governments to restore more than 210 million hectares of degraded land worldwide, the initiative is now focused on supporting the people restoring landscapes.

This position is currently remote due to Covid-19. Once our offices open up, you would ideally be based in Kigali, Rwanda or Washington, DC. Other locations will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Existing work authorization is required for wherever the position is based.

Job Highlight:

In this role, you will both join and create discussions with the constant aim of supporting the people and organizations on the front lines of restoration. You will connect our most important partners: people who engage in land restoration work. You will ensure that they are supported with robust practical information and clear guidance, as well as ample opportunities to connect with one another in moments when it matters most. You are curious about the nature of degraded landscapes, the socio-economic challenges impacting communities, emerging restoration techniques and business models that support long-term transformation.

You will be supported by the Global Restoration Initiative’s communications team and the TerraFund team. You will report to the initiative’s Director of Communications and Engagement.

What you will do:

  • Create and engage on online message boards populated with restoration information and practitioners
  • Find opportunities to provide practical resources for restoration project leaders
  • Plan webinars for restoration cohort members
  • Adapt key GRI resources into formats that can be easily shared across multiple platforms
  • Track engagement and analytic data related to communication with restoration project leaders.


    What you will need:

  • Education: You hold a Bachelor’s degree in communications, international relations, environmental studies or a related field
  • Experience: 4+ years of relevant experience
  • Past experience working cross-culturally, especially within an African context
  • Past experience in a communications role, in which you used a variety of social media platforms for professional purposes
  • Basic understanding of geospatial data tools and other monitoring frameworks preferred
  • Languages: the person in this position should be comfortable working in both French and English.
