Qualification, Skills and Experience

Work experience of at least 2 years

University Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software and Product development, Manufacturing, Electronics, Civil Engineering, Water Engineering, Biosystems/Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Engineering or similar.

Willingness and ability to combine engineering with the service officer role

Duties include:

Mechanical, electrical and civil aspects, including deployment of prototype Pre-Paid Automatic Dispensers, yield testing, construction and rehabilitation of motorized and

manual boreholes

Introducing and managing preventive maintenance contracts for communities and other stakeholders such as NGOs, district government and water source sponsors

Training and sub-county officials and councillors on mobilization of preventive maintenance in rural communities, and partnering with them

Assisting local government in formulating and implementing appropriate legislation

Assist communities to build VSLAs incorporating water source management

Manage financial and administrative tasks with integrity and efficiency including managing local technicians and pump attendants

These roles involve working with district government, with communities, and with partner NGOs. Whave is a pioneer rural water utility and so interacts with communities in a business-like way to create social consensus and willingness to pay maintenance tariffs.

Business skills and numeracy, together with personal interaction, marketing community work, teamwork and social skills are therefore essential. You must be willing to ride a motorbike to accomplish work duties.

Important requirements for these roles are good social communication, numeracy, advocacy, marketing, business and adult education skills.

A good candidate should also have:

good understanding of the Uganda local government structures,

good language skills in one of these; Luganda, Lusoga, Teso, Karamajong. Other languages are also of interest

Computer skills especially in Ms Word and Ms Excel

Excellent communication, teamwork, interpersonal skills: a persuasive character

Working hours, and contractual conditions are standard, with scope for flexibility in duty station, domicile to suit individual circumstances. Remuneration is on a negotiation basis, depending on your skills and experience.
