Wetlands International – Ethiopia Country ProgramWetlands International has been active in Ethiopia since 2010. To strengthen its interventions in Ethiopia, Wetlands International is implementing projects in the Central Rift Valley including one aimed at improving Water Allocation and Irrigation Efficiency in Ziway Shalla Basin.
The project also aims to address the key problems causing the decline in water quantity and quality in the Ziway-Shalla basin, namely: Unchecked and inefficient use of irrigation water by smallholder horticultural farmers;
Lack of transparent and a fair water allocation and sharing model; Limited institutional frameworks and capacity for basin management; Poor watershed management causing erosion and sedimentation.
The project will be implemented through a consortium composed of Wetlands International (lead), Rift Valley Lakes Basin Development office (RVLDo), Meki-Batu Cooperatives Union, Joy-Tech, Acacia Water and World Waternet.
For the smooth implementation of the aforementioned project and others, we are therefore seeking a Technical Coordinator – Central Rift Valley to join our growing portfolio.
Duties and Responsibilities The Field Coordinator – Central Rift Valley will support the field team in implementation of projects in the Central Rift Valley in collaboration with project partners. Parallel to this the Field Coordinator is also expected play an active role in raising the profile of Wetlands International at local, regional and national levels.
Specific duties and responsibilities
Under the immediate supervision of the Program Officer, the Field Coordinator will:
Lead the development of business cases for small-holder farmers
Support the development of an Integrated Basin Management Plan and Water Allocation Plan for Ziway-Shalla Sub-Basin
Support institutional capacity building for RVLDo working closely with World Waternet
Design and implement watershed interventions in Ziway catchment using participatory approaches
Establish and maintain good relationships with the federal,
regional and district level relevant government offices, CBO’s, NGO’s and Embassies
Mainstream landscape approaches, integrated water resources management, wetland issues, ecosystem-based climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction and biodiversity conservation in different programmes and projects implemented by various actors.
Organize strong local support for initiatives aimed at saving Lake Ziway and Abijatta Shalla lakes national park and the biodiversity resources of the Central Rift Valley
Design/adopt a country level monitoring and evaluation strategy for the project
Ensure harmonization and synergy among implementing partners RVLDo, Joytech, Acacia Water, World Waternet, Meki-Batu Cooperative Union and Wetlands International)
Support different studies that will be conducted in the area
Facilitate events (workshops, trainings, field visits and meetings) with stakeholders
Undertake regular field visits, monitor project progress and prepare and submit quality reports and plans on time
Engage in other projects currently in the pipeline as per the direction given by the Country Program Manager.
Support project proposal development and fund-raising activities
Duration of initial contract: 1 years initially, including a probation period of 3 months, with a possibility of extension.

Selection Requirements
Education
A minimum Master’s degree in Water Resources/Watershed Management, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resources Management or related areas.
Experience
A minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience in coordination of similar projects;
Experience working with an International NGOs or local NGOs in a similar position will be an added value
Experience in water resource/environmental management involving multi-stakeholders;
A good understanding of the environmental challenges of Ethiopian Central Rift Valley;
Experience in small scale irrigation by small holder farmers;
Experience in project management including work planning, financial management, monitoring and evaluation and effective reporting.
Competencies
Strong leadership and people management skills;
Excellent written and oral presentation skills and ability to communicate and engage a variety of audiences;
Good command of Amharic, Oromiffa and English languages in all aspects;
Good networking skills with various stakeholders including government and international agencies;
Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks simultaneously;
Comprehensive and specialized computer usage skills as well as GIS and other software.
Remuneration
Remuneration is commensurate to experience and qualifications.
