Wetlands International has been active in Ethiopia since 2010. In its programs in the CRV, Wetland International is partnering with a range of stakeholders, such as the Rift Valley Lakes Development Office (RVLDo), Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA), Meki-Batu Small Holder Cooperatives Union, Joytech Fresh, Acacia Water, World Waternet, Ethiopian Wildlife and Natural History Society (EWNHS), HoAREC and the relevant Kebele, Woreda and Regional government bodies.
For the successful implementation of the on the ground interventions we are therefore seeking to hire an experienced and successful Community Development Officer to join our growing portfolio in the Central Rift Valley of Ethiopia.
Job summaryThe Community Development Officer will report directly to the Field Coordinator, Central Rift Valley and will be responsible for the implementation of project activities at community level and providing support in the mobilization of community and local government stakeholders.
These include supporting the field team in the mobilization and capacity building of target communities and local governments to plan and implement, facilitating and assisting in field visits, assessments and documentation of good practices, etc.
Specific dutiesUnder the supervision of the Field Coordinator, the Community Development Officer will be expected to:
Establish functional relationship with local governments and community stakeholders and regularly liaise with them for assessments, target settings (site and farmers’ selections), agreement signings, and activity planning.
Support in the selection of model farmers, organization of community groups and preparation of contractual
agreements between project partners, farmers and targeted woreda administrations.
Support capacity needs assessments, action plan development and awareness raising events.
Ensure sufficient support for model farmers and implementing partners to increase their capacity building and support local initiatives to be driven in their programme management.
Support partners and farmers in piloting water efficient, environmentally sustainable and economically viable water management, agricultural and wetland restoration activities;
Support in the organization of consultation meetings and planning workshops.
Support and facilitates community experience sharing sessions
Undertake regular field visits, monitor project progress and share updates to the technical coordinator on a regular basis.
Undertake a variety of specialized tasks related to results management, including support to design, planning, coordinating, managing data and reporting.
Develop and implement strategies to enhance a coordinated approach to community development, livelihood initiatives and the development of strategies that help to achieve agricultural water efficiency and ecosystem, resilience
Serve as a resource person in community development for all Wetlands International projects/ activities in the CRV
Monitor activities and discourse related to community development and water management issues, and ensure relevant databases are maintained;
Perform any other related functions as may be required by Wetlands International.
Job Requirements
Educational Qualifications, Experience and Competencies
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Integrated Water Resources Management, Environmental science or related fields.
Experience/ competencies
A minimum Four years of related work experience in Water resources management, watershed management or similar skills at the community level.
Consistently approaches work with energy and a positive, constructive attitude
Experience implementing a development program with communities and local governments in wetland settings
A good understanding of the environmental problems of the Central Rift Valley.
Strong interpersonal skills and experience working with community groups and/or government officials.
Flexibility, adaptability and team orientation; ability to work independently yet productively is essential.
