Western Cape Government Research Curator: Museum Research and Exhibition Service Jobs in South Africa



Job Purpose
  • The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Western Cape Government has an opportunity for a competent individual to undertake research on museum artefacts/specimens and their associated knowledge and to disseminate that knowledge through exhibitions or public programmes. This post is stationed in Cape Town, CBD.

    Minimum Requirements
  • An appropriate 3-year National Diploma/B-degree (equivalent or higher qualification);
  • A minimum of 3 years research experience.

    Key Performance Areas
  • Curate research for exhibition projects in accordance with the Department’s strategic objectives;
  • Conduct research with regard to collection management;
  • Heritage promotion;
  • Provide support with the development of all categories of new museums; Render a project management service with regard to exhibitions.

    Competencies
  • History, purpose, and functions of museums in society including their potential for nation building and tourism development;
  • Museum ethics;
  • Project planning and management including financial management;
  • Legislation, policy and regulations relating to the museum sector;
  • Exhibition design and display;
  • Desktop publishing techniques;
  • Museum exhibition making processes, collections management (information management) and preventive conservation practice and education services;

    Skills needed:
  • Exhibition arrangement/ implementation;
  • Sound organising, planning and time management;
  • Written and verbal communication;
  • Ability to work under pressure and make sound judgements; Ability to analyse documents and situations.
