YouAs Technical Advisor – Learning through Play within the War Child Holland Research and Development (R&D) team you have strong expertise and experience in a key technical area of work relevant to the PlayMatters project: Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), education (primary age, formal or non-formal), and/or MHPSS.
PlayMatters is a 5-year $100 Mil USD consortium project, funded by the LEGO Foundation and lead by the International Rescue Committee (IRC).
PlayMatters is designed to promote wellbeing and learning through play for all conflict-affected children aged 3 to 12+ in Ethiopia and Uganda, working with stakeholders including children, caregivers, educators, communities and education systems.
War Child Holland’s (WCH) role in the consortium includes co-leadership of the research agenda with IRC, as well as designing and implementing MHPSS/ Wellbeing interventions and resources that promote learning through play that will be implemented by the consortium partners and form part of the PlayMatters Play Library and Play Kits.
As Technical Advisor – Learning through Play you support and ensure quality program development and implementation for WCH within PlayMatters.
You provide technical support for relevant country, regional, and head office departments and/or WCH affiliates, and liaise with technical teams within War Child and the consortium, promoting collaboration and cooperation.
As Technical Advisor, you travel to head office and field locations of WCH, its affiliates and elsewhere if required to fulfil the obligations of this role. You are part of the R&D team and report to the PlayMatters Programme Manager.
You work in close collaboration with programme, R&D, and other department colleagues at head office, regional, and country level.
The role will be based preferably in Kampala, Uganda, however potential to be based in another War Child country offices can be discussed.
Your Challenge
Coordinate operationalization of PlayMatters programme strategy in your area of technical specialization **
Keep an overview across the content development streams and coordinate the participation of WCH technical staff across the content development processes for the PlayMatters project within WCH
Provide input in the intervention development process, specifically aiming to integrate a wellbeing component when working with teachers and caregivers on Learning through Play activities and approaches
Lead or support development and adaptation of interventions, standard-setting and quality framework development **
Support technical aspects of roll-out of PlayMatters content
Act as MEAL focal point for WCH in the PlayMatters consortium
Monitor and support the application of and adherence to
PlayMatters programme strategy and quality framework within WCH programming **
Ensure effective communication of PlayMatters technical developments and programmatic results
Work closely with researchers to ensure that content and implementation maintain fidelity with research trial design
Incorporate and apply emerging research findings in iterative program design and adaptive management of program quality**
Provide training materials and conduct training and capacity building for implementation of relevant PlayMatters content
Ensure adherence to relevant WCH policies and principles related to child safeguarding, inclusion, and accountability and assist with competency development and learning to achieve this
Participate in or facilitate on behalf of WCH relevant technical working groups, workshops, meetings, and workstreams, and continuously update relevant R&D colleagues and management on same.
Your Profile
Essential Qualifications
Masters or PhD in Psychology, Mental Health and/or Education and Child Development
Min. 5 years’ experience in area of expertise, of which at least 3 years in the field
Experience with MHPSS programs and interventions
Experience in designing, developing and adapting content, methods, tools, programs, interventions as well as designing and delivering trainings
Experience of working with government Ministries and other actors to develop curricula, guides and material
Experience of policy engagement/reform processes
Experience in forms of Teacher Professional Development and skills transition
Knowledge of East Africa context as related to children’s development and wellbeing
Knowledge and experience in Monitoring & Evaluation
Fluency in English, written and verbal
Strong advisory skills, understanding of (learning/capacity strengthening) needs
Excellent coordination and teamwork skills
Good facilitation skills & intercultural sensitivity
Good communicator, willing to share knowledge and experience
Willingness and ability to travel
Fully support War Child’s mandate and mission
Full-time role based in Kampala
Desirable Qualifications
Experience of working with and applying research and development inputs
Demonstrated ability to undertake thematic literature and content reviews
Experience of working in a (post) conflict setting
Basic familiarity with common research methodologies e.g. RCT
Project management experience.
