VSO has been operating in Ethiopia for more than two decades now implement high impact projects in education, health and youth engagement & livelihoods core program areas.
Our youth engagement programme focuses on building youth participation and active engagement through leveraging the social, political and economic situations of the country.
In particular it aspires the creation of vibrant youth community who plays active role in safeguarding vulnerable groups, sustaining the reform activities initiated by the youth themselves and national peace building effort.
Towards this, we are seeking to engage community volunteers who will will work as a change catalyst and support other youth in their community engagement and involvement in selected regions which include Amhara, Benishangul Gumuz, SNNP, Oromia and Addis Ababa.
The programme will be implemented in partnership between VSO Ethiopia and implementing CSO Partners and it is funded by VSO.
To this end we are seeking applications from youngsters interested to be engaged with this exciting volunteering opportunity.
The successful candidates will be given the chance to volunteer for about four months in supporting on-going community development activities placed in local partner organizations.
This is not a paid job but a volunteering opportunity to give back to the community we are part of. However, a modest amount of stipend will be given to support the living expense of volunteers.
The ideal applicant for this opportunity Is an Ethiopian living in Addis Ababa, Adama, Assosa, Benishangul Gumuz, Bahir Dar, Hawassa or Wolaita.
Should have first degree in any field of study
Should have a potential for leadership; this could be shown through participation in community initiatives
Is between the age of 21 and 29 years
Has the ability to satisfactorily communicate in English
Have a passion for volunteering
Can commit himself/herself to a full-time four months volunteering programme
The youth engagement community volunteer will have six general areas of responsibilities/activities. These are shown below.
Local partnership management
Conduct local stakeholders and partners’ assessment to determine preeminent actors incorporating government bodies, private sectors, youth and others concerned in youth engagement programme.
Design and implement local partnership strategy that brings mapped stakeholders together to work towards improved youth participation and engagement.
Participate in selecting youth engagement programme primary actor youth (10,000 and more direct beneficiary youth) and ensure that most appropriate people are targeted as per criteria and procedure set by the programme.
Local and regional context assessment and engagement opportunities outreaching
Take key position in the continuous effort to assess the local situation and determine potential opportunities for youth engagement.
Update local context periodically to reach-out the most viable youth engagement activity.
Continuously document and share the findings and achievements of local context assessment and opportunities outreaching.
Sharing skills, awareness and knowledge
Participate on different training and capacity development initiatives.
Organize planned events to share skills and increase awareness of youth on engagement opportunities.
Provide individual and group coaching for youth to help them identify and pursue effective engagement activity.
Transfer own engagement knowledge and skills among youth, towards increased commitment and strong determination in the pathway.
Community Engagement Planning and Mobilisation
Support youth to develop community engagement and other activities implementation plan.
Assist youth to communicate and endorse engagement plan among concerned partners.
Disclose endorsed community engagement plans among youth and other stakeholders.
Support youth to identify potential stakeholders and mobilise required resources (in-kind, financial and/or other relevant) for the implementation of planned activities.
Ensure timely development of engagement plan and resource acquisition.
Youth Engagement Intervention
Ensure the quality, appropriateness and effectiveness of youth engagement activities.
Support youth to implement planned engagement activities on time and at high quality.
Collect, document and share youth engagement interventions among stakeholders.
Assist youth to involve relevant stakeholders during their engagement undertakings.
Planning, Implementation, Reporting, Documentation and Communication
Develop periodic work plan (at least on a monthly basis) and submit to VSOE.
Ensure timely and proper implementation of planned activities.
Continuously collect reliable information (using hand-notes, report templates, picture and videos) and establish & maintain effective documentation.
Develop periodic reports (using appropriate templates) and share with VSOE on time (at least in a monthly basis).
Duration of the program: mid-July to mid November 2019
Job Requirements
Essential Requirements
Formal Education: At least BA in social science or related field.
Context: Aware about country, and region specific context especially around youth and engagement issues.
Technical Competence: Previous experience in relation to youth engagement and voluntarism programmes, and any relevant training taken.
Language – Amharic and English is mandatory and other local language is an advantage
Age: Above 21 and below 29
Computer skills: Basic, word and excel.
Desired
ICS (international citizenship service) prior experience in Ethiopia is highly desired.
Directly related experience: Any volunteer who is working in youth engagement programme with selected partners.
Voluntary experience: Previous similar voluntary experience in an advantage.
Residence: This post bases in Hawassa city, SNNP region.
No required: 30 candidates for each city
