UW-Kenya SPEED Study Data Manager Job Vacancy
Main Objectives of this position:
The University of Washington / University of Nairobi / Kenyatta National Hospital research collaboration is recruiting a Data Manager for the SPEED study (“Simulated Patient Encounters to Promote Early Detection and Engagement in HIV Care for Adolescents”), which is a randomized controlled trial evaluating a clinical training intervention to improve retention in care for HIV-infected adolescents in Kenya.
The SPEED study is being conducted in 24 HIV care facilities in Kenya over 4 years.
The study is using electronic medical record (EMR) data obtained at regular intervals from each site.
The SPEED Data Manager will be responsible for EMR data extraction, merging, storage, and reporting, according to study protocol and standing agreements with the National AIDS and STI Control Program (NASCOP).
The position is full-time and based in Nairobi. The Data Manager will report to the Project Director and Principal Investigator.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks include:
Under direction from the Principal Investigator and Project Director, the Data Manager will be responsible for the following activities, including, but not limited to:
Obtaining and management of EMR data from 24 facilities in the SPEED Study (50%)
Work with facility staff and NASCOP to obtain EMR data for this study at regular intervals according to protocol and data use agreements
Develop a secure server and data management process to maintain EMR data for this study
Develop standard operating procedures for appropriate use and storage of EMR data
Develop syntax to merge and prepare data sets for cleaning and analyses by study investigators
Data Reporting and Communication (30%)
Perform routine data audits of SPEED EMR data
Generate regular reports for the study team and partners
Work with the Team to identify and resolve issues with EMR data access and data quality during the study
Assist in
interpreting data and preparing manuscripts for publication
Participate in meetings with NASCOP on EMR-related study activities and prepare reports for NASCOP on request
Assist with presentations and other dissemination activities
Management and Training (10%)
Assist the Study Coordinator to supervise a Data Clerk who will support EMR entry and extraction
Perform trainings and orientations on data management and auditing for local stakeholders
Perform other related duties as required (10%)
Required Qualifications, Skills and Experiences:
Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Health Systems, or related field
Strong knowledge of quantitative health data
At least 2 years of experience in management and analysis of complex data sets
Experience with developing and implementing data management systems and protocols
Knowledge of EMR data systems in Kenya
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and excellent time management
Excellent team player, with demonstrated ability work effectively with a variety of local and international stakeholders
Strong written and oral communication skills
Desired Qualifications, Skills and Experiences:
Master’s Degree in Public Health or Health Information Systems
Experience in computer programming and/or health information systems desired
Experience working with Kenya EMR systems
Terms of Employment:
This contract will be for one year renewable.
Travel up to 30% to sites outside Nairobi is required.
The successful candidate will undergo 3 month probation period after employment.
