DutiesThe incumbent is the Political Assistant in the Political-Economic Section, contributing to research, analysis, and reporting on political developments, rule of law issues in Malawi, and bilateral and multilateral cooperation on issues of security and good governance.
The Political Assistant, in coordination with the Political Specialist, directly supports the Political Officer and the Political-Economic Section Chief by providing insight and background on the legal framework and functioning of the public sector.
Develops and maintains contacts across Malawi, including parliamentarians, local government and traditional authority leaders, political party leaders, civil society leaders, counterparts in government ministries, and law enforcement agencies.
Works closely with the Regional Security Office and Office of Security Cooperation to support coordination on peace and security initiatives and facilitate Post's Leahy vetting program.
Qualifications and EvaluationsExperience:Minimum two years of professional work experience in law, international affairs, political science, law enforcement, or public policy required.
Job Knowledge:
Required in-depth knowledge of the function of the Malawi government, key NGOs, and International Organizations.
Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Law, Political Science, Criminology, Sociology, or International Affairs required.
Evaluations:
Language:
Level IV (Good working Knowledge) speaking, reading, writing including the ability to translate English
Skills and Abilities -
Good interpersonal skills, use of prudence and good judgement in discussion with officials.
Rapid translation skills and ability to summarize large quantities of information.
Effective use of computer skills for word processing, email, and other office tasks.
Strong writing skills in English

Agency Benefits:
Locally Employed Staff, including Members of Household (MOHs), and Third-Country Nationals (TCNs), working at the U.S. Mission in Lilongwe, Malawi may receive a compensation package that may include health, separation, and other benefits.
For EFMs, benefits should be discussed with the Human Resources Office.
The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.
