Duties

A/V

The incumbent will be Cape Town’s A/V Technician for all non-Public Affairs Section (PAS) events and capabilities. Ensures Cape Town has all required modern A/V systems, including fixed and mobile devices with up-to-date equipment. A/V services are to be provided, including digital video conferences, in-house television signal distribution to the Consulate General, internet video teleconferencing capabilities, sound and
A/V management for events outside of the Consulate General and conducts training sessions to keep IRM
staff (and PAS staff where applicable) up to date.

Telephone

  • The incumbent is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing all of post’s telephone systems and the cabling within and between U.S. government buildings. Post’s telephone system comprises a PBX switch, associated wiring closets, terminal boxes, cable runs, phones, etc.

  • The incumbent installs, relocate and/or modify telephone systems and the associated equipment and cables connected to the telephone exchange.

  • He is also responsible for the telephone systems located at the CGR. Maintenance on the various systems includes maintaining and testing uninterruptible power supply (UPS), air conditioning, and electrical ground.


  • The incumbent must schedule frequent visits to test the equipment and clean and, if necessary, replace faulty equipment.

  • The incumbent determines methods and strategies. The incumbent provides training sessions to nd users.

    Radio

  • The incumbent plans to install, maintain, troubleshoots, and repair all unclassified radio and associated peripheral radio equipment used at post.

  • Responsible for programming all radio channels, frequencies or making other changes to equipment using specialized Motorola or Kenwood computer software configuration
    programs.

  • The incumbent uses sophisticated troubleshooting skills to analyze and inspect defective radio equipment to restore service.

  • He maintains a spare radio parts inventory to repair faulty radios. Radios that cannot be repaired at post are forwarded to RIMC or Washington DC for service. Supports RIMC radio
    technicians visiting post during upgrades and other projects.

  • The incumbent provides training sessions to
    end users.

    Circuits and Networks

  • The incumbent is responsible for setting up computer networks, maintaining them, monitoring them for availability and performance, and offering technical support. The work includes the Consulate General’s Wide Area Network (WAN0, the CGR’s Wi-Fi network, and the Consulate General’s LAN.

  • The incumbent Carefully monitors WAN circuits connectivity to ensure maximum performance of remote connectivity.

  • The incumbent uses Department-provided tools like Wire Shark and Smoke Ping to verify optimum service and minimum outages.

  • The incumbent will liaise with local ISPs to install and repair circuits.

  • S/He is also responsible for installing, configuring, and troubleshooting the Wi-Fi network at the CGR. The incumbent is responsible for
    both the hardware and software support for the networking components.

  • This work includes hands-on installation and maintenance tasks on network components such as routers, switches, and cabling. The incumbent configures the devices for addressing, security, and VPNs.

  • The incumbent ensures DS-approved cabling standards are adhered to and is often required to assist in laying data cables in roof trays, stairwells, and other hazardous/difficult-to-access areas and monitor attenuation and signal strengths.

  • The incumbent installs and terminates high speed fiber backbones (which requires specialized training) using highly sophisticated optical microscopes and lasers. The incumbent conducts training sessions to keep IRM staff up to date.

    Qualifications and Evaluations

    Experience:

  • Minimum of four years of experience repairing/maintaining communications equipment or networks is
    required.

    Job Knowledge:

  • The jobholder needs to be familiar with private branch exchanges, programming, maintenance, and telephone ancillary devices.

  • HF/UHF radio concepts and handheld applications, mobile technology, plans, and billing.

  • Basic understanding of television and cable networks.

  • Knowledge of power and grounding and IEEE concepts is required.

  • Must be knowledgeable about both local and wide area networks. General knowledge of A/V components and services are required.

    Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Management, Telecommunications Management or Electronics Engineering is required. Or in the absence of a Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Management, Telecommunications Management or Electronics Engineering is required

    OR

  • In the absence of a bachelor's degree in Computer Science. Information Management, Telecommunications Management or Electronics Engineering six years of experience repairing/maintaining communications equipment or network is required.

    Evaluations:

    Language:

  • Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing of English is required. (This will be tested).

    Skills and Abilities:

  • Good communications and technical skills.

  • Be able to diagnose and resolve problems and maximize the capabilities of resources.

  • Must have a valid Class 2 driver's license and must pass applicable testing for the operation of USG vehicles.

  • Jobholder will be an occasional money handler.

  • The incumbent must be able to lift at least 25kgs.

  • Basic keyboard skill is required
