DutiesThe Alumni Coordinator works under the supervision of the Public Diplomacy Officer for Public Engagement (PDO/PE) or Public Affairs Officer (PAO) designee and has no supervisory responsibilities.
Designs, develops, and coordinates the Mission's alumni programs for Emerging Voices (EV) exchange alumni, including youth and communities that are not included in traditional U.S. diplomatic engagement, such as civil society groups and populations vulnerable to extremist appeals; and for Established Opinion Leaders (EOL) exchange alumni, including influential individuals and institutions such as think tanks, syndicates, labor training institutions.
Working with Public Diplomacy (PD) colleagues in Pretoria and at three constituent posts, designs and implements a broad range of activities to maintain contact with alumni of all EV and EOL activities and initiatives. Develops a country-wide strategy for engaging alumni over the long-term, and, based on alumni insights and feedback, analyzes the effectiveness of various exchange programs based on Mission goals and recommends adjustments accordingly.
Qualifications and EvaluationsExperience: A minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in a multicultural, or multinational work environment is required, with project management, marketing, public relations, communication, or education duties as a significant part of the job is required.
Education Requirements:
University degree in International Relations, Communications, Marketing, American Studies, Intercultural/Multicultural Studies, or local equivalent is required.

Language:
Mandatory: Level 4 (fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing English is required and Level 4 (fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing one additional South African official language is required. (This may be tested).
Skills and Abilities:
Analytical Skills:
Must have strong analytic skills and the ability to conceptualize how best to use PD tools to move South African attitudes in positive way.
Must be able to advise senior leaders of opportunity to promote Mission objectives through alumni outreach and programming; identify, analyze, predict, and continually assess EV and EOL audience attitudes; and evaluate the impact of projects and modify approaches for best outcome.
Communication/Interpersonal Skills:
Must have excellent customer relations, interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, and be able to identify and engage key figures critical to shaping local public
opinion.
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking, interviewing for evaluation purposes, writing reports, and contributing material for publication in English and local language; must be tailor communications to fit formal and informal situations and different ethnic, religious and linguistic cultures.
Must be able to brief on a variety of issues and interpret informally between English and local language for public programs.
Management Skill:
Strong management skills are required, including the ability to develop and oversee project budgets.
Must be able to negotiate agreements with partner institutions and manage their fulfillment.
Technical Skills:
Good keyboarding and data entry skills and excellent familiarity with electronic discovery tools, in particular the internet, and standard information retrieval practices and procedures are required.
Thorough, detailed knowledge of various computer software programs, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, graphic design and photo editing software, and PD-specific software, database, and reporting tools is required.
Must be able to use social media and mobile platforms, photo and video sharing sites, podcast creation, and basic photo and video tools.
Must have good numerical skills to develop and manage projects and monitor grant budgets; must be able to develop descriptive statistical analysis of target audience segments and impact of eV exchanges activities and initiatives.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word is required. (This may be tested)
Familiarity in Microsoft Excel is required. (This may be tested).
Availability: Must be able to travel throughout South Africa to support Alumni projects and activities.
