Duties

  • The incumbent provides driver/chauffer services driving passenger motor vehicles, truck and buses for the motor pool for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Program in Nairobi and Kisumu in accordance with instructions received from the Motor Pool Supervisor and/or Dispatcher, and within CDC and U.S. Embassy regulations.

  • Drives CDC staff to various locations within Kenya. Transports CDC staff between CDC offices, the U.S. Embassy and its affiliated sites, as well as host government and implementing partners’ offices. Transports official visitors of CDC Kenya as required to various field sites. Transports official supplies for CDC to their destination within Nairobi and Kisumu and the surrounding areas. When necessary, provides travel services outside of Kenya.

  • Transfers official CDC travelers to and from the airport.

  • Drives CDC vehicles, for which the incumbent is qualified and licensed to operate in accordance with Motor Pool Supervisor and/or Dispatcher instructions.

  • Delivers official documents and checks between the embassy, the bank and CDC offices.

  • Assists CDC staff, as needed, to load and off-load supplies or other duties associated with project work.

  • Complies with all CDC and U.S. Embassy safety and security rules while remaining vigilant to potential threatening situations and is always prepared to take evasive action to protect passengers by moving them swiftly out of harm’s way and to a safe location. Remains alert at all times providing necessary security for the vehicle.

  • Maintains assigned vehicles in a clean and serviceable condition, performs minor preventive maintenance and safety checks on a daily basis and informs the Motor Pool Supervisor and/or Dispatcher of discrepancies.

  • Completes the daily usage record for the assigned vehicle. Responsible for receiving fuel in the vehicle assigned in accordance with CDC Kenya and U.S. Embassy procedures. Accepts responsibility for any signed-for fuel or other vehicle needs.

  • Performs daily inspection of assigned vehicle to ensure that the vehicle is clean in and outside, seat belts are operational, engine, radiator, brake, clutch and battery fluids are at recommended levels, and the vehicle is in good running condition.

  • Ensures that vehicle tools and spare tire are in operational condition in the vehicle.

  • Performs minor preventive maintenance and safety checks on a daily basis and informs the Motor Pool Supervisor and/or Dispatcher of discrepancies. Completes accident reports within 24 hours of an accident.

  • Is available for field trips, weekend duty, holidays and overtime on a rotating basis or as necessary. Ensures that his/her travel vouchers are submitted promptly for processing after a field
    trip.

  • Remains current and knowledgeable on CDC and U.S. Embassy Policy for motor pool usage and reports any misuse of a vehicle by Embassy personnel or co-workers.

  • Monitors the local travel and driving environment, and takes action to avoid demonstrations, road construction or areas, which could pose a danger to the travel of passengers or vehicles.

  • Knows the locations of hospitals, police stations, and foreign missions.

  • Wears the proper chauffer uniform while on duty.

  • Does Not Utilize the Cell Phone While Driving.

    Qualifications and Evaluations

    Experience:

  • Required to have five years commercial driving experience including one year’s experience driving four-wheel drive vehicles and to have possession of a valid Kenya commercial license, class B, C, E.

    Job Knowledge:

  • Must know Kenyan traffic laws and be familiar with traffic patterns in and around Nairobi.

  • Must be knowledgeable on vehicle operation and maintenance procedures, international and local traffic signs and laws, anti-terrorism driving tactics, emergency first aid, locations of hospitals, and official residences.

  • Must have knowledge of radio operations procedures for responding to vehicle emergencies.

    Education Requirements:

  • Completion of high school is required.

    Evaluations:

    Language:

  • Must have level III English (Good working knowledge, Reading/Speaking/Writing)(this may be tested) and Level II Kiswahili (Limited knowledge, Reading/Writing/Speaking).

    Skills and Abilities:

  • At the time of interview, must demonstrate through road tests one’s skills in handling vehicles and the ability to drive defensively to avoid accidents and personal injuries.

  • Must have a record of accident free driving in Kenya for at least 3 years.

  • Ability to communicate using radio/cell phone, and provide emergency first aid.

  • Must be in excellent physical condition with eyesight correctable to 20/20, pass a comprehensive background investigation and medical exam.

  • Must have knowledge of Microsoft applications.

  • Basic typing skill is required.
