DutiesIncumbent serves as a Consular Assistant and processes consular sections’ full Non-Immigrant visa services. Incumbent is responsible to screening consular applications according to applicable immigration laws and Department of State and Department of Homeland Security regulations, ensuring that they are complete and accurate.
Screens cases for fraud indicators and advises adjudicating officers. Advises the unit supervisor about daily/weekly/monthly priorities. Helps in replying to e-mail correspondence. Serves as a subject matter expert on procedures and provides guidance to Correspondence Unit staff and other members of the staff on case work.
Incumbent translates for consular officers at the time of interview. Receives interview waiver applications, processes, and prints visas. Works with CSRA contractor in overall visa application process. Incumbent is directly supervised by the local Senior Non-Immigrant Visa Assistant.
Qualifications and EvaluationsExperience:
At least two years of progressively responsible experience in administration, providing government services or para-professional work is required.

Completion of high school education is required.

Evaluations:
Language:
English speaking, reading and writing - Level IV (Fluent) is required. (This may be tested)
Amharic speaking, reading and writing - Level IV (Fluent) is required. (This may be tested)
(You are required to pass the English Placement Test (EPT) that is conducted by the Human Resources Office).
Skills and Abilities:
Incumbent must be able to operate IT and consular equipment and use consular automated systems. This includes good knowledge
of word processing and Excel and Access databases.
Must be able to use basic consular equipment such as PCs, visa printers, photo and document scanners, wet and dry seals, and the microphone system. Incumbent also uses copiers, a shredder, fax machines and telephone equipment.
Must be able to apply USG and Ethiopian Law, regulations and policies to a wide variety of applications for immigration benefits. #
Must be able to listen effectively and advise consular clients.
Must be patient with both clients and adjudicators.
Must be able to work steadily in a difficult environment and under considerable pressure from highly emotional clients.
Must be able to act in an ethical manner and be confident when dealing with clients.
Must be flexible and able to work with all colleagues.
Must be willing to be cross trained in other units and back up other consular assistants.
Ability to deal with the public with tact and sensitivity.
Ability to work under pressure and with flexibility to accommodate the broad range of demands associated with this position.
