DutiesThe Strategic Content and Press & Media Coordinator works under the supervision of the Public Affairs Officer (PAO) or PAO designee, and has no supervisory responsibilities.
He/she receives work guidance from the Public Diplomacy Officer/Spokesperson (PDO/SPOX) and Public Diplomacy Officer for Strategic Content Coordination (PDO/SCC) at Embassy Pretoria.
The incumbent is responsible for advising the PAO on strategic planning for programs on critical issues such as promoting prosperity and good governance; countering transnational threats and fostering American security; advancing public health, human rights, and dignity; and countering violent extremism.
He/she monitors regional press and digital media coverage of issues of importance to the United States.
Identifies and advises Consulate and Embassy leadership on strategies for programs in the Johannesburg consular district that promote accurate, balanced public and media coverage of U.S. foreign policy and American interests; correcting misinformation; and countering disinformation.
Maintains Consulate flagship digital properties and oversees public engagement through those properties (social media, website content).
Researches and analyzes audiences for Consulate digital properties; customizes and develops online engagement to promote Mission objectives.
Builds productive relationships with local and regional press and media professionals in the Johannesburg consular district in person and online.
Develops policies, procedures, and guidelines for Consulate use of evolving digital technologies.
Coordinates Public Diplomacy (PD) strategic planning, audience research, and program evaluation and measurement for the Consulate in consultation with the Embassy Pretoria Strategic Content Coordination (SCC) Specialist.
Develops on-the-job training for Consulate staff participating in online engagement.
Develops policies, procedures, and guidelines for external Consulate communication in crisis situations.
Qualifications and Evaluations
Experience:
A minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in a media outlet, think tank, university, NGO, international organization, foreign embassy, government office, or corporation is required, with responsibility for public relations, public affairs, journalism, communications, marketing, outreach events, press conferences, and other media interactions as significant parts of the job.
Must have experience managing digital properties, and content creation in multimedia and traditional formats.
Job Knowledge:
Detailed knowledge of
U.S. foreign policy objectives and American interests in South Africa.
Good understanding of U.S. historical, political, economic, and cultural forces that shape U.S. foreign policy.
Comprehensive understanding of South African and regional press/media institutions and professional journalism standards and practices, as well as trends in audience preferences for information consumption (print, TV, radio, online).
Must have an understanding of communication trends in the region and internationally as they affect the South African and regional information landscapes and must be familiar with influence patterns in information flow.
Comprehensive knowledge of target audience groups including regional, demographic, ethnic, socioeconomic, cultural, and linguistic factors and the influence of religious, cultural, and educational institutions in shaping South African attitudes.
Knowledge of commercial marketing techniques, market (audience) analysis and analytics, and customer service.
Knowledge of trends in regional and international communications patterns and how they affect the South African communications landscape.
Knowledge and understanding of how to identify engagement opportunities and how to leverage them within the societal norms of each community.
Must have knowledge of commercial and regulatory aspects of digital marketing and advertising products and services and the general knowledge of project management, including defining project objectives, outcomes, and assessment methods.
Education Requirements:
University degree in communications, journalism, economics, international relations, political science, or local equivalent is required.

Language:
Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing English is required and Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing one additional South African official language is required.
