    Duties

  • As part of the Consular Section's Regional Fraud Prevention Unit (RFPU) covering seven countries and nine posts, the Fraud Prevention Investigator (FPI) develops and conducts case investigations, manages the maintenance and reporting of sensitive case findings and files, and continuously builds contacts and their own working knowledge to promote United States' security by preventing mala fide travel.

  • FPI educates Department employees and inter-agency partners about fraud trends to prevent mala fide travel.

    Experience

  • Three (3) years working experience in working field of criminology, journalism, forensics, social science or library science research or professional-level experience in investigative work is required.

    Job Knowledge

  • The FPI must have a good working knowledge of host country civil processes and government structures.

  • The FPI must have a basic knowledge of host country law enforcement practices.

  • The FPI must have a good working knowledge of host country banks and business documents and regional socioeconomic patterns.

    Education

  • Successful two (2) years post-secondary study is required.

    Language

  • Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing of English is required. (This will be tested).

    Skills and Abilities

  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required to develop and conduct effective investigations and reporting.

  • Computer software skills that include working with Microsoft Office products Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as conducting internet research is required.

  • Must be able to work in a time-sensitive, high-productivity environment independently with little supervision or oversight.

  • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel is required. (This will be tested).

    Agency Benefits

    For EFMs, benefits should be discussed with the Human Resources Office.

    The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.

    Important

    Applicants who claim status as a preference-eligible U.S. Veteran must submit a copy of their most recent DD-214 (“Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty”), equivalent documentation, or certification.

    A “certification” is any written document from the armed forces that certifies the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions within 120 days after the certification is submitted by the applicant.

    The certification letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service.

    Acceptable documentation must be submitted in order for the preference to be given.

    This level of preference applies to all Foreign Service employees on LWOP and CS with re-employment rights back to their agency or bureau.
