Duties

The American Spaces/Resource Coordination Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Public Affairs Officer (PAO) or PAO designee and receives work guidance from the Embassy Pretoria Resource Coordination unit and American Spaces Program Specialist (ASPS).

The position has no supervisory responsibilities. Oversees and coordinates activities and support for all American Spaces in KwaZulu-Natal and monitors their performance. Develops and recommends Consulate General Durban's strategic objectives and performance standards for American Spaces.

In collaboration with the Embassy Pretoria Public Diplomacy (PD) Resource Coordination team, is responsible for administrative aspects of Consulate General Durban PD operations, including budget and expenditure tracking, program support, scheduling, and other tasks.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Experience:

  • A minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience delivering information resources, public education, public affairs, or public relations in a multilingual, multicultural, or multinational public service institution (such as a museum, think tank, American studies or cultural center, or library) is required, with administrative and coordination duties included.

    Education Requirements:

  • University degree in communications, business, international affairs, public administration, American Studies, or local equivalent is required.

    Evaluations:

    Language:

  • Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing English is required and Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing one additional South African official language is required.

    Job Knowledge:

  • Detailed knowledge of U.S. foreign policy objectives and U.S. interests in South Africa; understanding of U.S. historical, political, economic, social, and cultural forces that shape U.S. foreign policy; and understanding of regional, ethnic, socioeconomic, cultural, and linguistic factors and the influence of religious, cultural, and educational institutions in shaping South African perceptions of the U.S. are all required.

  • Must have general knowledge of project management, including defining project objectives, outcomes, and assessment methods.

  • Knowledge of marketing techniques, market analysis and analytics, and customer service standards in the U.S. and S.A; knowledge of trends in experiential learning and audience engagement; understanding of the communications/information environment in the U..S and S.A;

  • Detailed knowledge of PD engagement tools, with related policies and procedures for each; and knowledge of multiple PD resource streams and regulations for their use are all required.

    Skills and Abilities:

    Analytic Skills:

  • Must have strong analytic skills and the ability to conceptualize how best to use
    PD tools to move South African attitudes in positive ways and to manage funding from multiple sources, each with differing requirements for purpose, oversight, and accounting.

  • Must be able to accurately assess resource challenges and identify solutions, including sensitive resource challenges.

    Communication lnterpersonal Skills:

  • Must have excellent customer relations, interpersonal, and cross-cultural communication skills.

  • Must be able to work effectively with Mission and Consulate personnel and with KwaZulu-Natal institutions on PD operations and resources, including sensitive or contentious financial topics.

  • Must be able to tailor communications to fit formal and informal situations and different ethnic, religious, and linguistic cultures.

    Management Skills:

  • Strong management skills are required, including the ability to develop and oversee logistics with partner institutions and manage complex PD/Consulate events.

    Technical Skills:

  • Good keyboarding and data entry skills and excellent familiarity with electronic discovery tools, in particular the internet, and standard information retrieval practices and procedures are required.

  • Thorough, detailed knowledge of various computer software programs, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, graphic design and photo editing software, and PD-specific software, databases, and reporting tools, is required.

  • Detailed knowledge of and ability to use social media and mobile platforms and basic photo and video skills are all required.

  • Must have good numerical skills to develop and manage project and grant budgets; must be able to develop descriptive statistical analysis of target audience segments and impact of American Space activities and initiatives.

  • Availability: Must be available to travel throughout South Africa to support American Spaces and PD projects and activities.

    Qualifications:

    All applicants under consideration will be required to pass medical and security certifications.
