Located in Nairobi, Kenya, the Kenya Multi Country Office manages a growing portfolio of engagements, including associated strategic and operational risks. The KEMC sub-region currently consists of an established operation centre in Nairobi, which manages a portfolio of engagements in multiple countries in East and South Africa.
This includes primarily transactional projects in partnership with Nairobi-based UN Agencies, UN-Habitat and UNEP, and multiple operational projects in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and several island states.

Purpose and Scope of Assignment

The photographer will, under general guidance of the respective communications focal point, be responsible for the production and editing of high quality photos relating to UNOPS projects and activities in the region.

Functional Responsibilities

The selected incumbent will undertake the following activities/responsibilities:

  • Producing high quality photos relating to UNOPS project events, visits, impact stories and other key activities.
  • Editing photos, including retouching and correction.
  • Writing captions and ensuring photos contain relevant and accurate metadata.
  • Assisting the establishment and maintenance of a photo database using the file naming and caption convention in agreement with the communications focal point.
  • Attending meetings with relevant project personnel to understand project briefs, needs and general vision and plan photo shoots.
  • The photographer will be required to have his/her own equipment and be available for travel, with the team or independently, as needed throughout the region or country where photographer is based;

    Delivery

  • At least five 5 digital photos in web resolution will be provided immediately upon completion of a covered activity;
  • Upon the completion of the covered programme activity provision of at least 20 digital photos, showing a diverse range of activities, will be uploaded to a designated Google Drive within 48 hours of completion of a covered activity.
    Photos must contain all relevant metadata, including keywords, captions, photo date, location, and subject) and provided in both low and high resolution (minimum 300 dpi) in JPG format names of people featured, credits etc. The files should retain their original names and be organized clearly by labeled folders.
    Photos must be provided in all three of the following formats. Web resolution jpegs (1600 pixels 98dpi); high resolution jpegs (minimum 4000 pixels, 300 dpi); and in PSD (editable) format;
  • Provision of at least five 5 digital photos in web resolution - immediately on site for instant distribution on social media and with press release;

  • All copyrights of produced photos are reserved to UNOPS KEMCO and the related projects. The photos cannot be altered, sold or redistributed to third parties. Where appropriate, the photographer will be credited.

    Education/Experience/Language requirements

    Education


  • Secondary education is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in communications, journalism, arts, media or other related areas is an added advantage but not a requirement;

    Work Experience

  • Six years of experience in photography and/or photojournalism is required. Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of experience may substitute;
  • Knowledge of local and national media scene in East and Southern Africa is an advantage;
  • Skills in MS Office, G-suite, Adobe Photoshop, and other related professional editing software will be an added advantage;

    Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of Kiswahili language is an asset.
