Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary General. We support programme implementation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services (www.unon.org).
The position is located in the Talent Development Unit of the Human Resources Management Service (HRMS), Division of Administrative Services (DAS), at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). TDU provides an extensive range of language and professional training courses for all staff working around the world for UNEP, UN-Habitat and UNON. The incumbent reports to the Chief, Talent Development Unit and will work under the daily supervision of the Language Programme Coordinator.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesUnder the supervision of the Language Coordinator, the Language Teacher will:
Prepare lesson and course plans: use a syllabus and specified materials to prepare lesson plans, adjust these plans and take account for lessons learned; select/design supplementary activities; ensure lesson-to-lesson coherence; plan a balanced, varied scheme of work for a module; design task to exploit linguistics and communicative potential of materials; design multi-level tasks to meet individual needs and lesson objectives.
Deliver interactive linguistic training, and manage and monitor participants learning: manage teacher-class interaction effectively; give clear instructions for individual and group work; deliver linguistic training in accordance with agreed plans; monitor individual and group work accurately and thoroughly; provide effective individual feedback using various methods; use appropriate technology/software/training materials to enhance the learning experience; select appropriate combination of techniques to suit learners and learning situation. Keep an updated attendance class list and submit a copy to the Language administration office weekly.
Assess learners progress: design or select appropriate methods to assess learners progress; conduct test and interviews; coordinate and mark placement tests and progress assessments (oral and written); provide feedback to learners of their progress and ways to develop their linguistic skills; use technology/software and apply recognized standards to assess spoken and written proficiency. Submit student assessment reports at the end of the term.
Support the conduction of evaluations: Seek general feedback/comments/recommendations from the participants; provide a short debrief/report to the Language Coordinator at the end of
the language term on lessons learned, participant feedback, areas for improvement; evaluate materials effectively from practical and theoretical perspectives; provide feedback on the effectiveness and efficiency of the language programme;
Prepare the learning environment: prepare and test all support devices (computer/laptop, projector, video, presentation, flip chart, white/smart board, video player, blog, chat, social media, online homework/group work, online community, handout and other materials needed for the course).
Assist in other activities as required, including but not limited to harmonization of the language teaching across duty stations, organisation of special events etc.
Qualifications/special skills
First level University degree in languages, linguistics OR related field or degree in a language related field is required.
A minimum of three (3) years of documented teaching experience is required. Must have taught at all levels, developed examination and specialized courses.
Experience in using collaboration technology and a tool to support delivery of linguistic training is an asset as well as experience in teaching through the use of various learning methodologies, here-under face-to-face, distance learning and online learning is desired.
Experience with managing Online Learning Platforms/Learning Management Systems such as Moodle/Schoology is desirable.
Teaching Experience at all levels, Experience developing examinations and specialized courses is desired.
Languages
Fluency in both English and the Language you are instructing the students in, is a requirement. In the PHP indicate this by stating: Fluent in Reading/Speaking/understanding/Writing the language, English as well as the Language of Instruction (if different than English). Note that “Confident” will be interpreted by the system as “Less than Fluent”.
UNON Language Programme prides itself on having its Programme Teachers who are Mother Tongue speakers of the language of instruction. Please indicate but note that Passing of the UN LPE is NOT a requirement.
