Job Summary: We seek to appoint a Laboratory Scientist in the state-of-the-art Wits Isotope Geoscience Laboratory.
This metal-free, ultra-clean (Class100-10) facility processes geological samples using isotope dilution and ion exchange chromatography for a range of isotopic analyses including, Sr-Nd-Hf, Fe-Cu-Zn, Ca, and Al-Be.
The Laboratory Scientist will be responsible for management and daily operation of the laboratory, as well as training of laboratory users and technique development.
In addition, the scientist will also be encouraged to advance his or her own research program within the School of Geosciences.
Brief Description
Key Performance Areas:
General laboratory upkeep and safety, including reagent preparation, procedure evaluation and safety protocol
Training all users of the laboratory and ensuring that a safe working environment is maintained
Responsibility for technique development
Pursue independent research projects and be expected to contribute to the research output of the School
Key Competencies:
Efficient, observant, and able to pay attention to detail
Good analytical and organizational skills
Excellent communication and training skills
Meticulous, well organized
Minimum Requirements:
Ph.D. in Geochemistry or Geology or Inorganic Chemistry
Extensive work experience in ultra-clean, metal-free laboratories including processes involving sample digestion, isotope dilution and ion exchange chromatography
Experience with the analysis of geological materials, especially for academic purposes
Understanding and prior experience in mass spectrometry as applied to academic geoscience research
Experience in all types of mineral separation and sample preparation
Laboratory management experience
