University of Cape Town Senior Lecturer - Course Convenor - Jobs in South Africa
UCT Division of Family Medicine seeks to appoint a permanent senior lecturer in family medicine to co-convene the Becoming a Doctor (BaDr) course, as well as to convene the Family Medicine strand of the BaDr course. This is a full-time academic position.
The BaDr course comprises of three strands – Family Medicine, Clinical Skills and Languages This course integrates three strands, namely family medicine, clinical skills, and language and communication (isiXhosa & Afrikaans).
Students learn and practice interviewing skills, history-taking and physical examination skills and learn concepts of professionalism and human rights. The family medicine strand aims to develop an understanding of the delivery of healthcare, its management and organization as well as introducing students to aspects of health promotion and disease prevention. Students gain practical experience of the doctor-patient relationship, the bio-psycho-social approach to patient
care and the consultation process and, develop skills in the basic clinical examination of patients within a community
setting.
Tutorials integrate the learning of clinical skills with language acquisition and understanding of cultural aspects of
patient interaction. Later, learning takes place in community practices, clinics and other centres, where students interact with patients
Requirements:
• MBChB with postgraduate training at diploma level in family medicine and/or health sciences education.
• Registration and in good standing with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
• Minimum
experience includes 3-years post-community service of diagnostic clinical practice in public or private sector.
• Minimum experience includes 3-years of classroom-based and/or clinical teaching experience with undergraduate medical students.
• Proven administrative and organizational skills.
• Familiarity with the South African healthcare system.
• The ability to interact effectively with a wide range of professionals at designated teaching sites.
Advantages:
• Postgraduate training at master’s or doctoral level in family medicine and/or health sciences would be highly advantageous.
• Experience in course convening would be highly advantageous.
• Research experience would be highly advantageous.
Responsibilities:
• To convene the 2nd and 3rd year Becoming a Doctor (BaDr) course.
• To assist with the teaching and learning activities on campus and clinical teaching in district-based health services and NGOs in the Division’s MBChB Family Medicine BaDr course.
• To maintain and further develop the curriculum and oversee its effective implementation.
• To convene Year 2 of the MBChB programme.
• To contribute to academic leadership and administration in the Division of Family Medicine, the School of Public
Health and Family Medicine, the Faculty of Health Sciences as well as the broader UCT academic environment.
• To conduct family medicine and primary care-related research.
• To contribute to the university’s social responsiveness programme.
