as Research Assistant (RA) in the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health at University of CapeTown.
Research is a core function of the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health, which has a very active research program. Research is regarded as integrally linked with clinical services, and research areas include development of improved diagnosis, prevention,
treatment and advocacy strategies for childhood illness, so advancing the care of children and improving current management.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Kirsten Donald, head of the Division (HODiv) of Pediatric
Neurodevelopment at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. The main purpose of this position is to offer support to the
HODiv who is principal investigator (PI) and collaborator of several concurrent research studies.
Requirements:
• Honours qualification within the social science discipline or another relevant and related discipline (e.g.
Psychology, Public
Health etc.)
• 1 year of previous research assistant experience
• Exceptional organizational skills
• Strong academic writing skills
• Computer literacy
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
• Ability to co-ordinate, multi-task and work under pressure
Responsibilities:'\
• Assist with data collection on PIs studies, as and when required
o Administer formal standardized cognitive and behavioural assessments
Complete administrative tasks (e.g. typing, editing, drafting motivations, report writing, etc.) relating to:
the submission of the PIs publications to academic journals and other platforms
the preparation of research articles, conference posters and presentations
relevant reports on request from PI
the line managers’ research and academic needs
Grant applications and proposals
Progress Reports for Funders
Ethics applications
Ethics Progress Reports
The following would be advantageous:
• Experience in and/or demonstrated interest in Pediatrics research
• An understanding of the processes relating to the administration of research projects
• Masters qualification
