Org. Setting and ReportingThe Investment Policy Section (IPS) within the Regional Integration and Trade Division (RITD) is offering an internship for three (3) months with an opportunity for extension, pending the needs of the Division. The internship is UNPAID and full time. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. The Internship is located in the IPS of the RITD at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa. The UNECA is mandated to promote the economic and social development of its member States, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development. ResponsibilitiesAssist with research on issues pertaining to investment and trade in Africa;
Support in developing presentations; drafting documents, servicing meetings, and servicing requests for information;
Undertake research and analytical studies to support Member States in the formulation and designing of policies relevant for Africa’s transformation through regional integration and trade;
Liaises with other Sections of the Division on matters relating to trade and investments;
Collaborate in various assignments in relation to the two mentioned studies;
Assist with managing the datasets (collects, evaluates, interprets and analyses data) on study, on determinants of intra-African investments including: retrieving data from public sources; data entry where necessary;
Support in the manipulation of the datasets to make them accessible and user-friendly;
Support the data synchronization process among all data collecting partners, including the UNCTUD, IMF and CEPII databases among others;
Assist to create data visualization and other types of outputs to support the final report and other publications, if it is needed; and
Assist with other tasks as needed and participate in some day-to-day operational tasks of the division.
Qualifications
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation; Be computer literate in standard software applications; Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in either English or French (Oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of another official UN language desirable.
