Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. We support programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UNHABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference, Security, and information services (www.unon.org).

The position is in the Information and Communications Technology Services Department, Nairobi Kenya.

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), Information and Communications Technology Service (ICTS) internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the supervision of the Senior Information Technology Assistant, the interns will:

  • Assist in configuring and setting up new machines.

  • Assist in migrating machines to Azure AD.

  • Assist in installation of applications and documenting processes

  • Assist in troubleshooting and providing support to user machines.

  • Assist in basic wireless and wired network troubleshooting.

  • Assist in physical movement of ICT equipment.

  • Communication with site supervisors clearly on any issues.

  • Assist in scanning and removal of malware infections from computers.

  • Assist in conducting applications and OS upgrade lab tests.

  • Assist in deployment of software updates.

  • Assist in computer image capture for forensic analysis.

  • Provide network administration services.

  • Monitoring the health of the overall network, reporting problems and incidents as necessary.

  • Participate in the configuration and installation of Network Architecture.

  • Thoroughly test all challenges prior to implementation.

  • Assist to prepare network schematics/ diagrams and documents.

    Education

    Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).

  • Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).

  • Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Preferred areas of studies:

  • Information and Communications Technology (ICT)

    Work Experience

  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

  • Experience in data analytics or related areas is required.

  • Experience working within the Microsoft O365 environment is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
