Org. Setting and ReportingThis position is in the Welfare Unit of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Headquarter in Juba. Classified in the "E" category and as a non-family duty station. The Staff Welfare Assistant reports directly to the Chief Staff Welfare Unit.
ResponsibilitiesWithin delegation of authority, the Staff Welfare Assistant at this level will be responsible for the following duties:
• Assists in developing programmes designed in improving staff members’ living and working conditions within the mission area.
• Assists in creating a caring and stress-free environment whereby staff members feel that their well-being is given due importance.
• Increases staff awareness and information about social and recreational opportunities available of resources to them in the mission through contributing to the induction training of new staff, by producing a guide to the local amenities, regularly updating information posted on the intranet system, and developing links with local resources as appropriate.
• Improves the recreational and social opportunities for staff by convening representative staff welfare committees.
• Assists in developing regular recreational activities for staff (such as outings, film nights and other social events) and works in partnership with administration to secure a staff recreation space and gym.
• With the chief of unit, facilitates increased welfare initiatives in the Field Offices and Team sites through offering support to committees and fostering the development of new committees.
• Provides assistance in developing the expertise, profile, and capacity of the Welfare Unit by identifying funding opportunities.
• Assists in assessing the welfare needs within the mission and provides a focal point for welfare initiatives within the mission.
• Assists in managing Welfare contracts (PX, Cafeterias, etc) and ensures that they meet performance expectations.
• Monitors stock of welfare owned equipment in the storage locations at MHQ and Field Offices including preliminary actions for stock replenishments.
• Assists Receipt and Inspection Unit with the inspection of welfare goods and ensure compliance with specifications of purchase orders.
• Provide technical advice to Chief Welfare, FAOs, and Welfare Committees on all matters related to welfare owned equipment.
• Participate in the preparation and performance of welfare
acquisitions measures (drafting description of preliminary technical specifications for requirement, evaluation criteria, goods inspection, submission of deficiency reports, performing technical evaluations)
• Performs any other duties as assigned.

Education
High school diploma and advanced skills are required.
Work Experience
At least eight (8) years of experience in planning recreational and welfare events is required, in which at least 4 years within a field operation.
Experience in organizing conferences, corporate events or management of leisure facilities is desirable.
Experience in Contract Management is desirable.
Experience in maintaining welfare-related technical equipment is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required.
