United Nations IT Assistants Jobs in Nairobi
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General.
UNON supports the programme implementation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services. The posts are located in the Division of Conference Services (DCS).
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Information Technology Unit, the incumbents will perform the following duties:
Responsibilities
End User and Conference Support:
Assist in monitoring service desk operations, logging of trouble tickets, categorization into incidents, problems and requests, servicing of calls, escalate where necessary and ensure timely resolution;
Support meeting operations including requirements definition, resource planning, preparation, setup, delegate support and eliciting feedback for continual improvement;
Assist in recruiting and supervising interns and short-term staff to assist with the workload during peak periods;
Coordinate with the Information and Communication Technology Section (ICTS), the Enterprise Application Centres and external vendors on the resolution of trouble tickets.
System and Database Administration:
Performs system and database administration on DGACM Systems and 3rd party Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) applications including the Digital Signage system;
Apply the latest patches and upgrades to applications;
Participates in regular meetings with the users and developers on proposed changes and enhancements to the systems;
Assists in implementing projects at the Nairobi Duty Station;
Develop training materials and conduct training for new and existing users in the use of DGACM applications;
Prepare and maintain technical documentation and user manuals;
Monitor the usage and user-satisfaction of applications and make recommendations for improvement.
Application development and support:
Participates as a member of the applications development team in the full software-development lifecycle (SDLC) including feasibility study, systems analysis, design, development, quality assurance, implementation, training, documentation and maintenance of new moderately complex systems;
Ensures that all web applications adhere to UN Policies on access control and minimum security requirements for public-facing websites of the UN Secretariat;
Maintains the underlying Virtual Machine infrastructure;
Prepare software development coding standards;
Provide guidelines and ideas on introduction of new technologies.
Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Supplemental training in Computer Science, System Administration, Database Administration, Service Operations, System Analysis, Software Development, or other related IT field is required. ITIL Service Operation, Prince2 Foundation/Practitioner, CompTIA, MCSD, MCDST, MCITP, CCNA, Agile/Scrum and other relevant IT certifications are highly desired.
MUST have passed the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) or the Global General Service Test (GGST) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices away from Headquarters.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant and progressively responsible experience in the Information Technology field specifically in the areas of system/database administration, service desk operations and software development is required. Proven experience in web technologies in a LAMP environment (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) including HTML5, CSS, Javascript, Drupal 6,7 & 8 Content-Management System (CMS) application development is required. Knowledge of mobile app development is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include substantive assessment which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Appointment against these posts is on a local basis.
These posts are funded for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension.
External candidates will be considered only when no suitable candidates from the duty station are identified.

Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her.
In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
