Setting and ReportingThe United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
UN Environment's Communication Division communicates UN Environment's core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UN Environment worldwide. This post is located in UN Environment/Communication Division at the Nairobi duty station. the incumbent will perform the following:
Responsibilities
Content and activity implementation:
Plan and implement content and activities against the internal communication strategy and defined objectives and targets, tracking progress on the status of strategy implementation and resource mobilization;
Work in close coordination with all UN Environment offices, divisions, regions, and associates.
Strategy implementation:
Implement, monitor, and revise an internal communication strategy for UN Environment, undertaking broad consultation with stakeholders as required, and advising and ensuring appropriate tools and channels are used throughout the organization in accordance with appropriate governance/guidance.
Event production and communication support:
Support the planning and execution of UN Environment events, within and beyond the division;
Perform the function of a communication officer and undertake other duties as assigned and when required;
Serve as the division’s sustainability focal point;
UN Environment and UN system communication coordination:
Serve as secretariat for UN Environment on the relationship with the United Nations Communications Group including weekly briefings and engagement with the global group.
Support the coordination of communication mandates and activities between UN Environment and the rest of the UN system of organisations.

Planning and Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies;
Identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.
Education
Advanced degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Communications, Marketing, Social Sciences or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years’ responsible work experience in programme management, corporate communications, and public information, or related area is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and oral English is required. Working knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
Special Notice
This position is temporarily available for a period of
182 days. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.
Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.
This temporary job opening may be limited to “internal candidates,” who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15.
Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply.Submitting an application or selection for the current temporary job opening does not delay or increase the mandatory age of separation.
