United Nations Human Settlements Programme Junior Engineer/ Engineering Associate Jobs in Kenya; This position is located within the UN Habitat Ethiopia Programme with Dire Dawa as duty station but with the need to travel to different project sites in Meiso, Magalacad, Qoloji, Babile, Awbare, and surrounding areas in the Somali and Oromia regions.
The Junior Civil Engineer will be responsible for ; (i) the assessment of upgrading works and the preparation of assessment reports including on compliance, progress and quality,
(ii) supervision of the construction/rehabilitation projects as undertaken by UN Habitat
(iii) supervising all construction related activities, preparing and reviewing Bills of Quantities (BOQs), payment certificates, and assisting in the preparation of bid documents and revisions
(iv) act as a focal person for job specific tasks, as may be assigned
(v) provide support to the implementation, reporting, monitoring and evaluation of operations related to various UN Habitat projects The Junior engineer will be under the direct supervision of the Project lead.
2. Duties and Responsibilities Within the delegated authority, the incumbent will have to perform the following assignments independently and in collaboration with the team members:
• Follow up on work progress through developing site inspection plans, responding to contractors’ Quality Control and Quality Assurance correspondences
• Participate in site inspection visits (daily and/or weekly basis) to collect technical information, and ensure compliance with approved designs and standards, as well as milestone achievements.
• Advise on materials selection, construction methods, and quality control measures to ensure adherence to project specifications.
• Prepare periodic progress reports and minutes of meetings and ensure proper archiving for each project.
• Maintain site records, including photographs, work logs, and material usage documentation.
• Track construction progress against the approved project schedule and report any deviations.
• Identify and report potential risks and delays to project stakeholders.
• Assist in the preparation and verification of BOQs for various project components.
• Evaluate implementing partner/contractor invoices and prepare payment certificates in accordance with work completed.
• Facilitate smooth communication between the project team, implementing partner /contractors, and local communities.
• Address community concerns and ensure alignment with project objectives.
• Travel regularly to the different project sites to oversee implementation and resolve issues on-site.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations and local construction codes.
• Attend technical meetings with stakeholders such as governmental institutions, donors, contractors and consultants/implementing partners – among others.
• Liaise with the local government/ municipality if any and other relevant bodies to ensure proper coordination and adherence to local regulations during the implementation process.
• Participate in testing and commissioning processes, ensuring all installed services are properly installed and functional.
• Participate in conducting final inspection of services, verify
compliance to the scope, propose and follow-up on corrective measures to be implemented by contractors/ implementing partners.
• Perform any other duties as required.
Qualifications/special skillsA High School Diploma is required.
A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management. or a related field is also required.
o Minimum of 2 years of experience in construction supervision, preferably in building construction projects, in technical infrastructure engineering/design production
o Experience in structural engineering and design review is an advantage.
o Strong knowledge of construction standards, project management principles, and BOQ preparation. o Proficiency in MS Office and engineering software such as AutoCAD and ETABS (or similar structural design software).
o Ability to work independently and travel frequently to project sites.
o Ability to follow work plans and schedules.
o Strong communication and report-writing skills.
o Experience in coordinating and working with High level Government officials, donors, iNGOs and/or UN bodies and related institutions in highly desirable. Experience in the humanitarian sector, including field experience, is an asset.

Assessment: Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in both written and spoken Somali language is required. Ability to communicate technical knowledge to non-expert audience is preferred.
