Org. Setting and ReportingThe Economic Commission for Africa's (ECA) mission is to deliver ideas and actions for an empowered and transformed Africa; informed by the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063.
The mission will be guided by ECA's five strategic directions which are: advancing ECA' s position as a premier knowledge institution that builds on its unique position and privilege to bring global solutions to the continent's problems and take local solutions to the continent; developing macroeconomic and structural policy options to accelerate economic diversification and job creation; designing and implementing innovative financing models for infrastructure, and for human, physical and social assets for a transforming Africa; contributing solutions to regional and transboundary challenges, with a focus on peace security and social inclusion as an important development nexus; advocating Africa's position at the global level and developing regional responses as a contribution to global governance issues.
This position is located in the Facilities Management Section (FMS) of the Division of Administration (DoA) at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The incumbent will work under the overall guidance of the Chief of BBMU (Building Management and Maintenance Unit) and direct supervision of the Broadcast and Conference Operations Supervisor.
ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Electronic Engineering Technician will be responsible for the following duties:
Under the supervision of the Broadcast and Conference Operations Supervisor, the incumbent is in charge of the maintenance and operation of all conference system/ audio - visual equipment related to conferences systems, CCTV surveillances system and related security system in the conference centre (UNCC) and ECA building (Africa Hall).
1. Carries out planned preventive & corrective maintenance and record keeping.
(a) Based on the maintenance manual, executes daily, monthly and three monthly functional checks of all conference system equipment, CCTV cameras and associated controlling equipment.
(b) Records all test results in the maintenance manual.
(c) Reviews and updates the maintenance manual annually.
(d) Checks sensitive audio-visual and conference system equipment's in UNCC and Africa Hall.
(e) Trouble shoots sophisticated electronic equipment.
(t) Compiles lists of spare parts needed, initiates the purchase, follows up the purchase, and checks proper functioning of purchased spare parts on arrival.
2. Repairs defective conference system audio-visual equipment.
(a) Based on maintenance manuals, repairs conferences system equipment, video monitors, television sets, amplifiers, CCTV cameras, simultaneous interpretation equipment, voting systems, and the like.
(b) Replaces aged parts periodically.
(c) Repairs and maintains all tools and machinery in the workshop with respect to emergency repair and maintenance interventions. Keeps the workshop in proper order.
3. Supervises the operation of conference supporting systems.
(a) Supervises conference system equipment operators.
(b) Trains new staffs on operation and preventive maintenance of conference system equipment.
4. Installs newly purchased audio-visuals systems and related equipment.
(a) Advises supervisor on new project proposals.
(b) Prepares specification and related documentation for the selection purchase and installation of audio-visual system equipment in the Conference Center.
(c) Assists in technical evaluation of contractors of
audio-visual systems installation.
(d) Assists in teamwork of other elector-mechanical trades in respect to needed maintenance.
(e) Initiates spare parts inquiry for conference system equipment; follows up the purchase and checking proper functioning of purchased spare parts on arrival.
5. Performs any other related functions as instructed by the supervisor.

EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent is required.
Diploma in in the field of electronics is desirable.
Job - Specific QualificationPassing the UN's Global General Services Test (GGST) is required. Please refer to the Special Notice section for additional information about the GGST.
Work ExperienceA minimum of seven years practical experience on maintenance and installation of audio-visual equipment in large establishments is required.
Experience interpreting sophisticated electronic drawings is desirable.
Experience with conference system equipment operation is desirable.
Experience with CCTV equipment operation is desirable.
Knowledge of application software and basic knowledge of computer hardware are desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a substantive assessment which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
