5. UN Women Policy Specialist, Women, Peace and Security Jobs in Kenya
Working with relevant counterparts including Member States, UN organizations, UN Women Country Offices and Multi Country Offices, and civil society organizations in the region, the Regional Office for East and Southern Africa seeks to translate UN Women's strategic plans, namely in the area of Governance, Peace, Security, Recovery and Humanitarian Action, and the peace and security component of the newly developed Africa Strategy, into effective context-specific programmes and results.
The East and Southern Africa Regional Office also supports the implementation of the Strategy for the Great Lakes on Gender and Prevention of Gender Based Violence and implementation of Security Council Resolution (SCR) 1325 in the region.
The Policy Specialist, Women, Peace and Security, supports the Regional Office’s planning, implementation, and management of UN Women’s interventions in peace and security. She/he works in close collaboration with the programme and operations team, UN Women Country Offices and Multi Country Offices, the Peace and Security and Humanitarian sections in HQ, UN Entities, Government officials, multi and bi-lateral donors, regional and sub-regional bodies, and civil society to ensure successful UN Women programme implementation under portfolio.
Under the overall guidance of the Regional Director of East and Southern Africa, and working under the direct supervision of, and reporting to, the Regional Governance, Peace, and Security Advisor, the Policy Specialist, Women, Peace and Security, will support the development of women, peace and security programmes, provide strategic policy support, provide capacity building to Multi/Country Offices, establish and strengthen partnerships, and develop relevant knowledge products on women, peace and security in the region.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesOversee the development of programmes on women, peace and security by Country Office/ Multi Country Office teams:
Provide advice on contextualizing/ localizing programme documents, country strategies, and knowledge products;
Provide strategic policy support:
Multi Country Office teams and partners:
Establish and strengthen strategic partnerships with
Oversee the design of a research agenda for the East and Southern Africa region and the development of knowledge products on women, peace and security:
Provide policy recommendations and guidance to strategic
planning and positioning on women, peace and security in the East and Southern Africa region;
Key Performance Indicators:
Timely and quality technical advice and support;
Leadership in area of expertise in the region;
Quality reports and other strategic documents drafted and submitted in a timely manner;
Strong relationships with various partners and stakeholders;
UN Women is well represented in important meetings on topics related to expertise;
Contributions to resource mobilization;
Timely and quality knowledge products.
Required Skills and Experience
Education:
Master’s degree or equivalent in gender, peacebuilding, human rights, international relations or other social science fields is required.
Experience:
At least 7 years progressively responsible experience in designing and managing programmes and advocating for women, peace and security, ideally with some experience in developing countries;
Experience in programme, policy analysis, and strategic planning;
Experience working with, and building partnerships with governments, donors and civil society organizations internationally and in the field;
Experience working with the UN is an asset;
Experience working in the East and Southern Africa Region is an asset.
Languages:
Fluency in English is required;
Knowledge of French and/or Arabic is an asset.
