Terms of Reference for Youth Advocate/HIV and AIDS
UNICEF Kenya has launched a Young Advocates Programme that will provide young people with opportunities to gain experience and develop practical skills.
Through active participation, Young People will be empowered to play an important role in their own development as well as their communities.
The programme will provide a platform for them to learn vital life skills, develop knowledge on human rights and citizenship and to promote positive civic action.
It will also encourage young people to freely express themselves, to effectively address problems, to actively participate in decision making process, and to help monitor the progress, constraints, and emerging topics related to youth issues.
How can you make a difference?
Under the supervision of the Adolescent and HIV Officer, the youth advocate will:
Provide general support to UNICEF’S HIV and Communication teams in work planning and coordination of the Young People Agenda and other advocacy and campaign drives.
Support in producing, film and editing videos for distribution to target audiences and partners.
Support in strategizing and coordinating distribution of multimedia content produced to ensure maximum visibility.
Assist in planning and preparing training events and training materials on HIV-related matters affecting children, adolescents and young people.
Support in organizing side-events, special sessions, and/or roundtables on thematic areas.
Support in enhancing the exchange of technical expertise through assisting in preparing for UNICEF news cafes.
Support by participating in meetings as it is deemed necessary and opportune, to formulate and monitor the strategic direction and guide programme implementation.
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
Youth Advocate/HIV and AIDS must be over 18 years with adequate writing skills, some academic
or work-related experience with the media (social media, journalism) and an understanding of the challenges, particularly HIV related, faced by adolescents and young people in Kenya.
Language:
English and Kiswahili are required
Administrative issues and Conditions
The Youth Advocate/HIV and AIDS will keep confidential all unpublished information made known to them during the course of their service and will not publish any reports or papers on the basis of information obtained during the period of their service, except with the authorization of UNICEF.
The Youth Advocate shall prepare, on request, a written report at the end of their service.
UNICEF accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the service as a Youth Advocate/HIV and AIDS, whether on or off UNICEF premises, and the advocate must, therefore, provide proof of enrollment in a health/accident plan.
There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the service as an intern.
The Youth Advocate must be legally able to work in Kenya.
The duty station of the Youth Advocate will be at UNICEF Kenya office in Gigiri, Nairobi with official travel in Kenya when necessary – with travel rights granted through a Travel Authorization (TA).
