Purpose for the job

The Radio Operator, at the G-2 level, provides reliable Telcom communication for Inter agency room 24/7 services for all UN and INGOs in Western Equatoria State , and monitor Staff movement on UNICEF/UN and other INGOS in the Field through HF/VHF radio, mobile Phones , Thuraya Satellite phones to communicate information to the Chief of Field Office through the Supervisor, transmits UNDSS security advisories on timely manner to staff for proper security precautions can be taken.

The post incumbent is ready to participate on rotational duty schedule of the radio room roster for full coverage of the service period ensure no gaps realized on duty roster.

Summary of key functions/account-abilities

  • Ensure radio network operation appropriate security telecommunication support to UNICEF Field Office.
  • Ensure Radio room equipment is well maintained and report any technical problem immediately to the Supervisor.
  • Track movement of Vehicles in the Field mission through well defined procedures.
  • Maintain the radio room accurate and precise records of incoming calls, transmissions and UNDSS advisories.
  • Ensure radio network operation appropriate security telecommunication support to UNICEF Field Office.
  • Provide 24-hour radio coverage responding to emergency communications from the field for security and medical evacuations.
  • This includes receiving telephones calls /messages and field reports from all humanitarian partners and communicate it to the focal points agency`s staff and DSS.
  • Guide and train inexperienced users in the use of HF, VHF including radio communication procedures and minimum operating security standards (MOSS).
  • Report to WFP Radio Room every morning about the status of the radio room equipment communication, weather conditions for Flight Information, Monitor the flight air Traffic Control, and broadcast the estimated arrival time of UNHAS flights and report the departure time to WFP UNHAS radio room.
  • Ensure that all communication equipment is operational and problems in transmission are recognized and reported to the supervisor for remedial actions.
  • Ensure carry
    out radio room inventory on handing and takeover of the duty.
  • Ensure the radio room is having the necessary stock supplies for the work progress.
  • Monitor movement of vehicles and staff in the field mission movement through HF/VHF radio communication, Thuraya phone, mobile phones and report through the supervisor to the Field Office management messages about their whereabout and their security status for appropriate decision making and alert the staff about UNDSS security advisories.
  • Conduct radio checks to all UN participating agencies and INGOs once a day and document status of the radio check results in respective agencies folders with the numbers of vehicles on mission and present in the duty station and share the report with respective agency focal point persons.
  • Provide 24-hour radio coverage responding to emergency communications from the field for security and medical evacuations.
  • This includes receiving telephones calls /messages and field reports from all humanitarian partners and communicate it to the focal points agency`s staff and DSS.
  • Maintain files updated of all correspondences, mobile tracking log sheets, flights tracking information and radio check results.
  • Report on radio room status report timely to the supervisor.
  • All the time keep communication equipment neat.

    Skills
  • Work experience on HF and VHF radio communication.
  • Computer Knowledge and usage of various computer applications like excel and MS word is a must.
  • Fluency in English language and knowledge of second UN language is an asset.
  • Training on handling minor work on HF and VHF will be an added advantage
  • Ability to work effectively with people of different national and cultural background
