The position sits within the Public Private Partnerships (PPP) team in the Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO). The ESARO office is a large regional office that covers 21 Country Offices and supports fundraising of significant resources in the region.
The 12 months temporary assignment reports to Regional Advisor, Public & Private Partnerships (PPP) and works in close collaboration with members of the PPP teams and other sections in the Regional Office.
The incumbent will benefit from a full exposure to public sector partnerships in the region and will benefit from significant learning experience.
How can you make a difference?Under the general guidance of the Regional Advisor, Public & Private Partnerships, the incumbent supports the regional collaboration with key public sector stakeholders and provide an interface for environmental scanning, knowledge exchange, resource mobilization, and policy influence. The incumbent may also serve as a focal point and resource for colleagues on specific thematic areas of strategic relevance for partnership development.
Key assigned partners are: direct support for the UK and US governments as well as the International Financial Institutions. Support as needed for other donors not assigned to any team members. Indirect support for Germany and the European Union. Flexibility is required in the allocation of donors.
Key thematic area of support is emergency fundraising.
This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya.
The following are the main duties and responsibilities:Develops and maintains strong partnerships with key assigned partners: maintain knowledge on partnerships and resource mobilization, organize regular senior level meetings, organize technical level meetings, support the regional sections in their engagement with donors and facilitate dialogue. Support country offices in their outreach with the given donors and ensure high level of intelligence on the donors. Maintain close relation with UNICEF PPD HQ and account managers. Develop and implement a strategy to deepen the partnerships.
Support emergency fundraising. Work closely with our regional sections on emergency fundraising, establish resource mobilization plan and work with teams across the region to grow income to respond to emergency. Work with sections to facilitate fundraising for fundraising for resilience.
Seeks and promotes new partnerships and resource mobilization, working with UNICEF colleagues to identify partnership and resource mobilization needs and broker resource mobilization agreements to meet those needs. Provides strategic, logistical and programmatic support to senior management and other UNICEF staff in corporate engagement and interaction with assigned partners.
Contributes to strategies for engagement and the development of communications products to enhance UNICEF’s visibility and influence with existing and prospective partners and key stakeholders by providing analysis of the current environment and trends and formulating recommendations for strategy approaches and message development.
Acts as focal point for identification and pursuit of opportunities for outreach, engagement, policy influence and collaboration, including on how to anticipate and respond to partners’ concerns and priorities, ensuring that UNICEF’s interests, perspectives, and knowledge are taken into
account in relevant policy and institutional processes.
Respond to any partnerships related technical support requests coming in from Country Offices - and assigned by the Partnerships Advisor.
Contributes to the development of new resource mobilization practices and approaches by formulating recommendations for action based on on-going monitoring, analyzing current trends within designated partners and formulating recommendations for strategy approaches and message development.
Acts as a focal point for identification and pursuit of opportunities for outreach, engagement, policy influence and collaboration, including on how to anticipate and respond to partners’ concerns and priorities, ensure that UNICEF’s interests, perspectives, and knowledge are taken into account in relevant policy and institutional processes, and ensure that they are fully aware of UNICEF’s perspectives, policies, priorities and capabilities. Contribute to the development and management of initiatives for high-level outreach, including for UNICEF’s Senior Management.
Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor to ensure the success of the team, including guiding, training, and coaching of the staff on partnership development and formulation of advocacy strategy.
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
An advanced university degree is required in one of the following fields: international relations, political science, communications, international development, or another relevant technical field.
A minimum of five years of professional experience in one or more of the following areas is required: public affairs, programme management, resource mobilization, external relations, or other relevant area.
Strong experience in developing and cultivating partnerships is essential. Experience in developing and implementing partnerships and resource mobilization strategy.
Experience in working with and across various levels of a major organization.
Prior experience with International Financial Institutions and/or with a donor partner is desirable.
Prior experience in the region and/or in a humanitarian context is desirable.
Diplomatic communication and negotiation skills to establish and maintain trusted partnerships for achievement of objectives and to develop close and effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
Current knowledge of humanitarian and development issues, trends, as well as programming policies and procedures in international development cooperation.
Demonstrated ability to formulate new approaches in respect of financing for SDGs and outreach- related activities.
Skill in the mapping and identification of new opportunities or requirements for partnerships.
Excellent communications skills, verbal and written.
Familiarity with political and governmental processes.
Ability to conduct sound policy analysis
Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
