Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For close to forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes.

The position is in the Planning Finance and Economy Section/ Urban Practices Branch/ Global Solutions Division, Nairobi, Kenya.

The Planning, Finance & Economy Section is responsible for coordinating the Agency’s substantive, normative and operational work on various dimensions of planning, finance and economy.

The Planning, Finance & Economy Section aims to develop, document, pilot/test and disseminate planning policies, norms, standards, tools, methodologies, regulatory frameworks, operating procedures and practices at global, regional, national and sub-national levels in support of (a) urban and territorial planning at all scales including urban design and public space design; (b) urban finance (municipal finance and urban development/projects finance); and (c) local economic development.

The Global Solutions Division (GSD) is responsible for providing programmatic direction for UN-Habitat and is responsible and accountable for the programmatic delivery of the Strategic Plan. The Division leads the tools and methodology production and the integration of the various substantive competencies towards effective delivery of the Strategic Plan and the mandate of UN-Habitat. It provides substantive training to staff members and supports capacity development of Member States and partners.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Web development – Our City Plans internship is for six (6) months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, the intern will assist in the web development, updating content, and providing maintenance to Our City Plans digital platform, built in Drupal, such as:

Back and front-end development of new themes, sections and contents for the site, including full Drupal deployment services.

Maintenance of site configuration and stability through debugging.

Building multiple Drupal modules and leveraging and updating existing modules.

Updating and configuring the site to meet specific needs.

Build prototypes for testing and getting user feedback.

Other functions as required.

Task Opportunities:

Familiarizing oneself with the United Nations.

Get familiarized with urban planning, participatory practices and capacity building with Our City Plans.

Conduct user research and implement new features in Our City Plans digital platform.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).

Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).

Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.

Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).

Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Qualifications and skills required:

Experience using Drupal for web programming, including associated libraries and tools.

Experience in development of both server side (Drupal/PHP) and client side (JavaScript, XHTML, CSS, etc.) software.

Portfolio of work (please add a link in the Cover Letter).

Preferred areas of studies:

Computer Science, IT, Engineering or any other related field of study.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Experience in using Drupal for web programming, including associated libraries and tools, is required.

Experience in building prototypes for testing is desirable. Explain how you meet this criterion.

Ability to achieve the submission of a report/ deliverable, in case of delay on the progress from your Team and ensure that the report still gets completed on time and meets the requirements of the supervisor is desirable. Explain How you meet this criterion.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
