Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For close to forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes.

The position is in the Planning, Finance and Economy Section/ Urban Practices Branch/ Global Solutions Division, Nairobi, Kenya.

The Planning, Finance & Economy Section is responsible for coordinating the Agency’s substantive, normative and operational work on various dimensions of planning, finance and economy. The Planning, Finance & Economy Section aims to develop, document, pilot/test and disseminate planning policies, norms, standards, tools, methodologies, regulatory frameworks, operating procedures and practices at global, regional, national and sub-national levels in support of (a) urban and territorial planning at all scales including urban design and public space design; (b) urban finance (municipal finance and urban development/projects finance); and (c) local economic development.

The Urban Basic Services Branch provides policy and technical support to partner countries and local authorities in the areas of water, sanitation, waste management, mobility, and energy; emphasizing on equitable access to these urban basic services. The branch promotes the development of clean, energy efficient, affordable, and human-centered cities that can deliver better services to their citizens.

The Global Solutions Division (GSD) is responsible for providing programmatic direction for UN-Habitat and is responsible and accountable for the programmatic delivery of the Strategic Plan. The Division leads the tools and methodology production and the integration of the various substantive competencies towards effective delivery of the Strategic Plan and the mandate of UN-Habitat. It provides substantive training to staff members and supports capacity development of Member States and partners.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Urban Planning internship is for six (6) months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer PFES, the intern will:

  • Support the Urban Lab in Mexico and Our City Plans Team in developing concrete urban design and planning projects, urban plans, graphic materials, participatory workshops, trainings, and tools; conduct research on urban design and planning and consolidate best practices and case studies.

  • Support the development of concept notes and project proposals in the areas of urban planning and design, project bankability, climate change, urban resilience and urban management and innovation.

  • Assist in the development of urban planning policy documents, guidelines, information materials, and presentations through identification and review of relevant publications and documents, drafting and commenting on documents, and assisting in producing information materials.

  • Manage and edit content in the Our City Plans digital platform, according to user input and feedback and support in the communications.

  • Produce design and graphic materials (maps, diagrams, communication pieces, etc.) and presentations for the Urban Lab Mexico and Our City Plans.

  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

    Education

    Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).

  • Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).

  • Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Qualifications and skills required:

  • Creative writing and graphic skills to write and develop various communication materials such as articles, news, and other digital content.

  • Knowledge and good presentation, design skills and ability to develop strong graphic materials (Microsoft Office, Adobe, etc).

  • Familiarity with digital communication strategies.

    Preferred areas of studies:

  • Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Studies, communication, design, graphic, advertising or any other related field of study.

    Work Experience

  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

  • Experience working in urban design and planning projects is required. Explain how you meet this criterion.

  • Ability to achieve the submission of a report/ deliverable, in case of delay on the progress from your Team and ensure that the report still gets completed on time and meets the requirements of the supervisor is desirable. explain how you would meet this criterion.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
