The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all.

For close to forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes. The position is in the Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean / Global Solutions Division, Mexico City, Mexico and Nairobi, Kenya.

UN-Habitat Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (ROLAC) is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 2002, ROLAC opened representations in Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Cuba, Haiti and Costa Rica. Recently, the work of the Agency has come to El Salvador.

The office promotes and enhances sustainable urban development in the region and convenes the Latin American and Caribbean Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development (MINURVI with partnership with local governments, private institutions, universities and civil society organizations to work towards urban sustainable development and the promotion of the New Urban Agenda.

The Global Solutions Division (GSD) is responsible for providing programmatic direction for UN-Habitat and is responsible and accountable for the programmatic delivery of the Strategic Plan. The Division leads the tools and methodology production and the integration of the various substantive competencies towards effective delivery of the Strategic Plan and the mandate of UN-Habitat.

It provides substantive training to staff members and supports capacity development of Member States and partners.

The interns will work under the supervision of the Mexico Country Office and the Planning Finance and Economy Section, and under the direct supervision of the UN-Habitat Urban Lab Mexico.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Urban Planning internship is for six (6) months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, the intern will:

Development of urban planning and design diagnosis, including spatial analysis using Geographic Information System, to support UN-Habitat interventions at national and local level, with territorial, gender and human rights crosscutting approaches.

Support the Urban Lab in Mexico in the development of concrete urban design and planning projects, urban plans, graphic materials, participatory workshops, trainings, and tools; conducting research on urban design and planning and consolidating best practices and case studies and best practices.

Support the development of concept notes and project proposals in the areas of urban planning and design, project bankability, climate change, urban resilience and urban management and innovation.

Assist in the development of UN-Habitat Urban Lab urban planning policy documents, guidelines, information materials, and presentations through identification and review of relevant publications and documents, drafting and commenting on documents, and assisting in producing information materials.

Conduct research and produce actionable outputs in urban planning and design, public space design, urban regeneration, urban innovation in planning and mobility, climate change and housing according to

professional experience.

Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Task Opportunities:

Familiarizing oneself with the United Nations.

Familiarizing oneself with urban planning, urban environmental issues and urban development.

Conduct research and implement projects in state-of-the-art areas of urban planning such as climate change, digital technologies for sustainable urban development, urban resilience.

Assisting in the development of content and methodology on urban planning.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).

Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).

Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.

Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).

Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred areas of studies:

Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Studies, GIS, Geography or any other related field of study.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Familiarity with Project Planning is required.

Ability to multitask and work under tight deadlines is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written Spanish and English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
