Setting and ReportingThe United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For close to forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes.
The position is in the Programme Development Branch, Global Solutions Division, UN-Habitat, Nairobi, Kenya.
The Global Solutions Division (GSD) is responsible for providing programmatic direction for UN-Habitat and is responsible and accountable for the programmatic delivery of the Strategic Plan. The Division leads the tools and methodology production and the integration of the various substantive competencies towards effective delivery of UN-Habitat's mandate and Strategic Plan.
It provides substantive training to staff members and supports capacity development of Member States and partners.
The Programme Development Branch (PDB) is responsible for the overall coordination of programme development. It brings together normative and operational expertise supporting high-quality integrated programmes that maximize results across the outcomes and the Domains of Change in the Strategic Plan.
It builds on concrete demands of national and local governments, strengthening the capacity of government and urban stakeholders at all levels to address the social, economic, environmental and crisis dimensions of sustainable urbanization. The Branch also focuses on supporting global programme development to strengthen normative capacity and knowledge generation to increase impact and influence, through strategic partnerships.
In 2020 UN-Habitat launched its global flagship initiative SDG Cities. SDG Cities aims to support 1000 cities to accelerate their achievement of the SDGs. It does this by supporting:
The collection and analysis of data.
The generation of evidence-based action plans.
Strengthening capacities of local institutions.
The development of SDG impact project portfolios and their financing.
In regard to these components UN-Habitat has developed digital diagnostic tools, training packages and a Cities Investment Facility that can be accessed by city authorities and stakeholders. They will be supported through technical backstopping from technical units based at country, regional and global levels.
The flagship initiative anticipates reaching scale through establishing national SDG Cities Initiatives involving the participation of
national groupings of several cities, and through partnerships with national and regional city networks.Outstanding efforts of cities to accelerate the achievement of SDGs is recognized through a prestigious SDG Cities Certification.
The SDG Cities global flagship initiative aims to support 1000 cities to accelerate their achievement of the SDGs. It does this by collecting and analyzing data; generating action plans; strengthening capacities of local
institutions; and developing SDG project portfolios and their financing.
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), SDG Cities Communication internship is for six (6) months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the supervision of the Programme Lead of SDG Cities, the interns will:
Assist in designing and implementing the overall marketing strategy for SDG Cities.
Draft, format, edit and post news stories/ social media content, including graphics, photographs and videos.
Update the website content, preparing of briefing notes, concept notes and minutes.
Assist with planning and producing marketing campaigns across SDG Cities social media channels.
Contribute to internal UN-Habitat publications.
Prepare an SDG Cities newsletter.
Prepare specific content and materials (documents, reports, newsletters)
designed for the public, working closely with external partners.
Prepare promotional presentations and distribute marketing materials.
Assist with organization and filing of communication materials.
Assist with bi-weekly reporting.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).
Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.
Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, etc), knowledge of design, photo editing, and video editing).
Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred areas of studies:
Communications, Journalism, Marketing and Business Management, Social Sciences or any other related fields of study.
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Fluency in Microsoft Office (particularly Adobe, Excel, and PowerPoint), and Canva is required. please explain how you meet this criterion.
Experience where communication was tailored to different audiences with varying levels of understanding of technical terms and concepts related to sustainable development is desirable. Please explain how you meet this criterion.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Spanish language is desirable.
