The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all (www.unhabitat.org).The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) works in over 90 countries to advance the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the local level in accordance with the commitments and principles set out in the New Urban Agenda (NUA).

This internship position is located in the Coordination Office of the Regional Programme Division (CO/RPD) at the Headquarter of UN-Habitat in Nairobi, Kenya.

The CO/RPD serves as the coordination hub of planning, implementation and monitoring of regional programmes and country activities. Under the CO/RPD, UN-Habitat collaborates with the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government on the Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities (Shanghai Award) and the publication Shanghai Manual: A Guide For Sustainable Urban Development In The 21st Century. Shanghai Award aims to accelerate the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda) and New Urban Agenda (NUA).

It focuses on advancing Sustainable Development Goal 11, promoting the localization of SDGs, and incentivizing cities to find systematic solutions for sustainable urban development. In addition, the award will help build the platform for advancing UN-Habitat’s strategic plan and flagship programmes and the Global Urban Monitoring Framework.

The establishment of the Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities (Shanghai Award) was officially announced by the Executive Director of UN-Habitat at the first session of the 2022 Executive Board of UN-Habitat on 30 March 2022. The first cycle of Shanghai Award was completed in 2023 and winners announced on 28 October 2023 during the observance of World Cities Day.

Established in 2011, the Shanghai Manual was developed following the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, China. The Manual serves as an important knowledge product and tool to support mayors, urban managers and urban practitioners in achieving sustainable urban development.

The main function of this internship is to assist the implementation of Shanghai Award 2nd cycle and the Shanghai Manual 2024 annual report, including providing support to the external communications and advocacy activities for the implementation of the project as well as supporting other relevant cooperation activities. The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Regional Programmes Division internship is for 6 (six) months.

The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Under the supervision of the Inter-Regional Advisor of the Regional Programme Division (RPD), the intern will:

  • Assist in drafting, editing and preparing
    publicity materials related to the joint project of Shanghai Award and Shanghai Manual, including news, emails, social media content, posters, messaging and outreach materials.

  • Assist with technical documents development (guidelines, application form, reports) related to the award application and review process.

  • Collaborate with developers to optimize the layouts and functions of Shanghai Award

  • Support with routine updates and maintenance of content on the Shanghai Award website.

  • Assist in organizing and participating in meetings, workshops, seminars, and other events and processes related to work under Shanghai Award and the Shanghai Manual.

  • Assist the administration and other management aspects of the joint project.

  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the supervisor.

    Qualifications/special skills

    Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher),

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent),

  • Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).

  • Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

  • Preferred areas of study: Communications, Media Studies, Advertising, Web Design and Development, Public Affairs, International Relations, Urban/Public Policy or any other related field. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

  • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. Do you have experience in creating content for the public, e.g. social media posts, emails, newsletters, etc. If yes, please elaborate. Do you have experience in website design, development, and content management? If yes, please elaborate.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
