Org. Setting and ReportingThe United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all.
For close to forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes. The position is in the Programme Development Branch, Global Solutions Division, UN Habitat, Nairobi, Kenya.
UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate and affordable housing for all.
It works with organizations at every level, including all spheres of government, civil society and the private sector, to help build, manage, plan and finance sustainable urban development. The Global Solutions Division (GSD) is responsible for providing programmatic direction for UN-Habitat and is responsible and accountable for the programmatic delivery of the Strategic Plan.
The Division leads the tools and methodology production and the integration of the various substantive competencies towards effective delivery of the Strategic Plan and the mandate of UN-Habitat. It provides substantive training to staff members and supports capacity development of Member States and partners.
The Programme Development Branch (PDB) is responsible for the overall coordination of programme development. It brings together normative and operational expertise supporting high-quality integrated programmes that maximize results across the outcomes and the domains of change in the Strategic Plan.
It builds on concrete demands of national and local governments, strengthening the capacity of government and urban stakeholders at all levels to address the social, economic, environmental and crisis dimensions of sustainable urbanization. The Branch also focuses on supporting global programme development to strengthen normative capacity and knowledge generation to increase impact and influence, through strategic partnerships.
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Programme Management internship is for six (6) months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
ResponsibilitiesDaily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the (Programme Management Officer) the intern will:
Support in the logistics and workshops facilitation in the Sister Neighborhoods project.
Support in the preparation of the Urban October SDG Cities and Youth Advisory Board (YAB) events.
Provide overall support to follow-up on meetings and telephone conferences with partners and beneficiaries.
Provide assistance in the administration process of the SDG Cities and Sister Neighborhoods activities.
Support research activities on SDG Cities and informal settlements related issues.
Arrange and take part in regular project team meetings.
Assist in the coordination of participatory data collection process facilitated in the SDG Cities Flagship Programme.
Provide support in the project’s communications through the official social media accounts of UN-Habitat Youth, World Urban Pavilion and SDG Cities.
Contribute to the drafting of one-pager write ups, official
letters, web stories, concept notes and legal documents.
Support the Programme Management Officer when needed.
Carry out any other tasks requested to support the Programme Development Branch.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).
Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.
Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).
Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred areas of studies:
Social Studies, Psychology, International Relations, Law, Arts, Communications, Business or any other related fields of study.
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Familiarity with the New Urban Agenda and the SDGs is required. Please explain how you meet this criterion.
Experience in digital communications or design tools is desirable. Please explain how you meet this criterion.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Spanish language is desirable.
