Setting and ReportingThe United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For close to forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes.
The position is in the Planning, Finance and Economy Section/ Urban Practices Branch/ Global Solutions Division, Nairobi, Kenya.
The Planning, Finance & Economy Section is responsible for coordinating the Agency’s substantive, normative and operational work on various dimensions of planning, finance and economy. The Planning, Finance & Economy Section aims to develop, document, pilot/test and disseminate planning policies, norms, standards, tools, methodologies, regulatory frameworks, operating procedures and practices at global, regional, national and sub-national levels in support of (a) urban and territorial planning at all scales including urban design and public space design; (b) urban finance (municipal finance and urban development/projects finance); and (c) local economic development.
The Urban Basic Services Branch provides policy and technical support to partner countries and local authorities in the areas of water, sanitation, waste management, mobility, and energy; emphasizing on equitable access to these urban basic services. The branch promotes the development of clean, energy efficient, affordable, and human-centered cities that can deliver better services to their citizens.
The Global Solutions Division (GSD) is responsible for providing programmatic direction for UN-Habitat and is responsible and accountable for the programmatic delivery of the Strategic Plan. The Division leads the tools and methodology production and the integration of the various substantive competencies towards effective delivery of the Strategic Plan and the mandate of UN-Habitat. It provides substantive training to staff members and supports capacity development of Member States and partners.
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Communication and Graphic Design internship is for six (6) months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
ResponsibilitiesDaily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, the intern will assist in the definition and implementation of the communication strategy of the Urban Lab Mexico, Our City Plans and Flagship Programme 1, such as:
Support and contribute in the communication activities, events and materials.
Identify, collate and prepare informative and promotional materials for diverse media, researching different sources of information as required.
Assist with writing of news articles, newsletters, reports, articles, and concept notes.
Support in the graphic design, photo and video editing of outreach, promotion and information material, such as publications, presentations, catalogues, brochures, videos, flyers, infographics and handbooks.
Review and monitor communication channels and metrics associated with the projects and initiatives.
Update regularly Our City Plans digital platform and social media content, including news and events.
Research best practices for communication and identify the media that fits the projects objectives and purpose.
Participate in team meetings, prepare minutes and help to coordinate follow-up activities.
Create surveys and assist in their analysis and translation of results into various communication media/applications.
Assist and plan activities and events regarding all the projects and areas UN-Habitat works.
Other functions as required.
Task Opportunities:
Familiarizing oneself with the United Nations.
Familiarizing oneself with urban planning, urban environmental issues and urban development.
Conduct research and implement
projects in state-of-the-art areas of urban planning such as climate change, digital technologies for sustainable urban development, urban resilience.
Assisting in the development of content and methodology on urban planning.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).
Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.
Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).
Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Qualifications and skills required:
Knowledge and good presentation and graphic design skills (Microsoft Office, Adobe, etc).
Familiarity with digital communication strategies and knowledge of social media platforms.
Experience and knowledge on urban planning is highly valued.
Preferred areas of studies:
Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Journalism, Communications, Graphic Design or any other related field of study.
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Familiarity with digital communication strategies, social media platforms and designing informative materials for diverse media is required.
Knowledge and good design skills are desirable. Explain how you meet this criterion.
Experience in graphic design, photo and video editing of outreach, promotion and information material is desirable. Explain how you meet this criterion.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English and Spanish is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
