Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For close to forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes.

The position is in the Planning, Finance and Economy Section/ Urban Practices Branch/ Global Solutions Division, Nairobi, Kenya.

The Planning, Finance & Economy Section is responsible for coordinating the Agency’s substantive, normative and operational work on various dimensions of planning, finance and economy.

The Planning, Finance & Economy Section aims to develop, document, pilot/test and disseminate planning policies, norms, standards, tools, methodologies, regulatory frameworks, operating procedures and practices at global, regional, national and sub-national levels in support of (a) urban and territorial planning at all scales including urban design and public space design; (b) urban finance (municipal finance and urban development/projects finance); and (c) local economic development.

The Urban Basic Services Branch provides policy and technical support to partner countries and local authorities in the areas of water, sanitation, waste management, mobility, and energy; emphasizing on equitable access to these urban basic services.

The branch promotes the development of clean, energy efficient, affordable, and human-centered cities that can deliver better services to their citizens.

The Global Solutions Division (GSD) is responsible for providing programmatic direction for UN-Habitat and is responsible and accountable for the programmatic delivery of the Strategic Plan.

The Division leads the tools and methodology production and the integration of the various substantive competencies towards effective delivery of the Strategic Plan and the mandate of UN-Habitat. It provides substantive training to staff members and supports capacity development of Member States and partners.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Climate and Geospatial Data internship is for six (6) months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, the intern will assist in the definition and implementation of the Urban Lab Mexico and Nairobi activities and outputs, such as:

  • Support in creating and maintaining geodatabases and in the overall management of environmental, climate, socio-economic and urban data for projects.

  • Assist in the data collection process and geospatial analysis using global, national and local datasets and remote sensing approaches linked to climate change, environmental management, and urban planning.

  • Develop maps and other graphic representations using different geospatial processing software, such as ArcGIS and/or QGIS.

  • Conduct statistical analysis applying different methodologies and software such as R, SPSS and/or STATA.

  • Support the development of climate-related data analysis, including hazard and vulnerability assessments and mapping (flood risk maps, urban heat island maps, etc.).

  • Assist in the analysis and development of climate projections, climate modeling, and statistical downscaling through programming approaches (Python, R).

  • Assist in the development of climate-related publications, plans, recommendations, actions and projects to support UN-Habitat interventions at national and local level, in alignment with international frameworks, such as the Paris Agreement, the New Urban Agenda and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

    Task Opportunities:

  • Familiarizing oneself with the United Nations.

  • Familiarizing oneself with climate change, urban planning, urban environmental issues and urban development.

  • Conducting research, developing and implementing projects in state-of-the-art urban planning areas such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, digital technologies for sustainable urban development and urban resilience.

  • Assisting in the development of content and methodologies on urban planning and climate change adaptation and mitigation.

    Education

    Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).

  • Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).

  • Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Preferred areas of studies:

  • Computer Sciences, Geosciences, Geography, Environmental Studies, Environmental Engineering, Climate Change Sciences, Data Sciences or any other related field of study.

    Work Experience

  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

  • Experience in the development of climate change and urban resilience projects is desirable. Explain how you meet this criterion.

  • Experience in research and Data Analysis is desirable. Explain how you meet this criterion.

  • Knowledge in the development of climate-related data analysis and geospatial processing software is required. Explain how you meet this criterion.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Spanish language is desirable.
