Organizational Setting:

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The overall objective of the UN Environment's Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision-makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive.

It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. With the Industry and Economy Division, the Chemicals and Health Branch promotes joint approaches to the environment and health that demonstrate the economic, environmental and health advantages of sound chemical and waste management.

The Branch works closely with governments, international organizations, industry, and civil society around the world to develop solutions for the sound management of chemicals and waste. The position is in the Industry and Economy Division, Chemicals and Health Branch, Global Environment Facility Chemicals and Waste (GEF C&W) Unit.

Reporting lines:

Under the overall supervision of the Head GEF Chemicals and Waste Unit, the consultant shall report directly to the Task Manager. Final deliverables shall also be approved by the Portfolio Manager, GEF Chemicals and Waste Unit.

Specific tasks and responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for the following duties:

1. Task Management Support of projects 10902 Financing Agrochemical Reduction and Management (FARM) Kenya-Uruguay full-sized project (FSP) and 10903 FARM Global FSP:

  • Weekly calls with supervisor

  • Monthly calls with executing agencies as required

  • Project quarterly
    progress and financial reports obtained, reviewed and forwarded to TM for final clearance

  • The organization of Steering Committee meetings for projects supported

  • Annual workplan, budget forecast, procurement plan and communication plan obtained, reviewed and forwarded to TM for final clearance

  • Initiation/extension of Project Cooperation Agreements (PCAs)

  • Organization of closing revision

    2. Project Development Support to the lead consultant in the preparation of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) endorsements for the following projects under the GEF 8 Integrated Programme on Supply Chains 11176 Supply chains Trinidad and Tobago and 11177 Supply chains Global:

  • Agreed on sections of project documents drafted and submitted for review

  • Organization of interagency coordination calls supported

  • Draft project documents submitted for internal review

  • Project documents submitted to PRC review

  • Project documents submitted for CEO Endorsement to the GEF

  • Addressing of the comments of internal/PRC/GEF Sec review supported

    Qualifications/special skills

  • A bachelor’s degree in the areas of biology, chemical management, sustainability, development or related fields is required.

  • At least 2 years of working experience in project management at the international level is required.

  • Working knowledge of Global Environment Facility (GEF) projects (development and supervision) required.

  • Experience in conducting terminal review of GEF enabling activities is required.

  • Work experience in the United Nations is desirable.

    Languages

  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of any other UN language is desirable.
