UNEB withholds PLE results for 1,886 candidates
Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) has withheld examination results of at least 1,886 candidates.
Addressing journalists at OPM offices in Kampala on Thursday, the UNEB chairperson, Prof Mary Okwakol said the results were withheld over examination malpractice.
She said a fake Primary Leaving Examination mathematics paper circulated prior to the exams affected performance of 2016 candidates.
According to Prof Okwakol, non-Universal Primary Education (UPE) candidates performed better than UPE candidates.
“Kyankwanzi had highest absentees at 6.12 percent followed by Gomba, Kotido, Buvuma, Mityana, Mubende,” she said.
According to her, performance was better especially in English language and Social Studies. “Urban areas posted better results than rural pupils,” she added.
Prof Okwakol further noted that Division one had a total of 63,400 candidates while Division two had 251,787 of the 640,833 candidates who sat from 12,391 centres registered for 2016 PLE.
"Overall performance shows that male candidates performed better than females but females performed better in English," she added.
Fort Portal Municipality, Entebbe, Ntungamo, Rukungiri, Jinja, Kabale, Masaka, Mbarara, Lira, Masindi were best districts with 98 percent and above pass rate.
Serere, Namutumba, Bulambuli, Kyankwanzi, Iganga, Kaliro, Mayuge, Kween, Luuka, and Buyende were the worst performing districts.
Boys did better than girls with 541,089 (87percent) passing, compared to 517,889 (86.2percent) the previous year. More pupils qualify to join post primary institutions.
Speaking at the same occasion, the education minister Janet Museveni said senior one selection is set for January 24 and 25 at UMA, Lugogo.
