Organizational Context
The Regional Bureau of East and Central Africa, located in Nairobi provides strategic and policy guidance as well as technical support to WFP operations and activities in nine countries: Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan, Djibouti and Uganda.
We are currently seeking to fill the position of a VAM Intern based in the Programme Unit of the Regional Bureau, Nairobi.
The Vulnerability, Analysis and Mapping (VAM) unit currently has 2 full-time staff (both national staff), in addition to the Head of the Unit, who leads VAM as well as M&E.
The staff have skills in a wide range of areas including food security assessments, analysis and monitoring, markets analysis, use of integrated food security phase classification (IPC), GIS and database management, and resilience analysis using various tools/methodologies.
The unit continues to support country offices (COs) in undertaking regular food security assessments and analysis to inform program designs and operations and resilience analysis to support the design of durable and sustainable solutions for the myriad problems posed by climate change in the region.
Besides, the unit actively supports regional platforms such as the Food Security and Nutrition Working Group (under IGAD) to undertake regional analysis on food security and climate related risks in the region.
Inevitably, simultaneous demands coming from country offices for support, and from regional platforms, continue to outstretch the available human resource within the unit.
To be able to effectively support these activities, assistance in needed in these range of activities.
More importantly, involvement in these activities will offer the intern an excellent opportunity to develop and hone his/her skills in food security analysis in a complex ecosystem as the Horn of Africa.
Standard Minimum Qualifications
Currently enrolled in the University and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or have recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme within the last 6 months from a university preferably in Agriculture, Economics, Statistics, Nutrition, Geography, Social Sciences or related fields;
Currently enrolled in a graduate programme (Masters degree) from a recognized university and have attended classes in the past 12 months;
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point);
Fluent in English (both oral and written) is a must; knowledge of a second UN language, preferably French would be an asset.
Key Account-abilities
The intern is expected to support
in the following areas:
Making use of in-house learning opportunity from the VAM/M&E team, and developing the regional food security dashboard using Tableau;
Learning from WFP online courses (We-learn) on the basics of food security, and updating the food security and nutrition database including populations in need of assistance, also in collaboration with the Nutrition unit;
Learning mVAM basics and assist in developing of systems and tools for mVAM monitoring and support country offices in roll-out and conducting mVAM;
Update the data for the regional Atlas and prepare data for the web-based application;
Learning integrated food security phase classification (IPC) and compile IPC dataset to determine populations in need;
Document lessons learnt in food security monitoring and success stories.

Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC)- level 1 (on-line and participation in an IPC analysis workshop)
Database management (on-the-job training)
Food Security dashboard development using Tableau (on-the-job and 1 training on the use of Tableau)
Functional Capabilities
Up-to-date database – IPC and markets
Production of food security dashboards using Tableau (Quarterly)
Regional VAM update (one time)
Desired Experiences for Entry Into the Role
Proficiency in Microsoft packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook)
Knowledge of statistical packages (i.e. EPI INFO, SPSS, R, STATA etc.)
Basic knowledge on GIS
Knowledge in survey methodologies/basic tenets in survey processes (design, development of questionnaires, conducting data collection)
Skills in literature search/secondary data review
Basic data analysis skills
Terms and Conditions
Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
Depending on the duty station of assignment, WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognized institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education;
