ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
The Regional Bureau for East and Central Africa, located in Nairobi, provides strategic and policy guidance as well as technical support to WFP operations and activities in nine countries: Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan, Djibouti and Uganda.
We are currently seeking to fill the position of a Gender & Protection Intern based in the Programme Unit of the Regional Bureau, Nairobi.
The unit is headed by the Programme Policy Officer and supported by the Regional Gender and Protection Officer. The unit requires support to the Gender, Protection and Accountability to the Affected Populations (AAP) activities in relation to the planning and implementation of 2019 activities, such as.
Analysis of risks related to the safety of women, girls, boys and men in relation to food assistance and identify prevention and mitigation measures.
Document best practices and lessons learnt and facilitate experience and knowledge sharing.
Review and provide inputs to the assessment tools, reports and other documents and ensure the documents meet WFP gender, Protection and Accountability to the Affected Populations (AAP) standards.
Assist in planning for trainings and capacity building activities and field missions.
STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Currently enrolled in the University and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or have recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme within the last 6 months from a university preferably in Gender, International Relations, Development Studies, Sociology, Community Development or related field;
Currently enrolled in a graduate programme (Masters degree) from a recognized university and have attended classes in the past 12 months;
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point);
Fluent in English (both oral and written) is a must; knowledge of a second UN language, preferably French would be an asset.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)
Under the overall guidance of the Head of the Unit and direct supervision of the Regional Gender and Protection Officer, the intern will carry out the following responsibilities.
Enhance Gender and Protection analysis and identify priorities and gaps as outlined in the Regional Gender Implementation Strategy in order to inform evidence-based programming;
Provide inputs to the assessments tools, reports and other documents and ensure the documents meet WFP Gender, Protection and Accountability to the Affected Populations (AAP) standards;
Provide support to the Gender Results Network (GRN) in implementation of the Gender Action Plans including identifying the
targets, compiling reports, organizing trainings and regular meetings with GRN members;
Support the Country Offices (COs) in implementing the Gender Transformation Programme (GTP) including conducting the baseline assessments, progress towards the benchmarks and reviewing the reports;
Assist the Regional Gender and Protection Advisor in planning for trainings and capacity building activities and field missions;
Perform any other duty as may be delegated.
The success criteria is the extent of contribution in mainstreaming and integration of gender and Protection and AAP for evidence-based programming in the region.

OTHER SPECIFIC JOB REQUIREMENTS
Ability to effectively communicate, adapt and build relationships is a vital skill in this role.
Additional capacity in knowledge management software is an added advantage.
Proficiency in the use of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint is a requirement. Tableau training will be provided.
DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE
Summary reports and briefs produced on the risks related to the safety of women, girls, boys and men in relation to food assistance in the 8 COs in RBN;
Functional GRN with action plans implemented;
Number and quality of trainings, missions and workshops supported;
Technical support provided to Monitoring & Evaluation and other sections in conducting baseline assessments in order to ensure that gender and protection is mainstreamed and integrated;
Number of bench marks reached for the GTP.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
Depending on the duty station of assignment, WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education;
