Org. Setting and ReportingThe United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements.
It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
The Best Practices Unit is leading the design and launch of the New Urban Agenda Platform which will serve as the central reporting mechanism and facilitate the exchange of knowledge, innovation and best practices.
The Research and Capacity Development Branch (RCDB) is currently leading the development and collaboration across UN-Habitat.
It is expected that the Platform will be an innovative knowledge management tool for the Agency and the UN system.
It will be a key contribution by UN-Habitat to the Knowledge Pillar of the UN system-wide approach to sustainable urbanization.
The Platform will advance the systematic access, sharing, and uptake of best practices and policies by the Member States and key partners.
The Intern will provide support and contribute to the development and improvement of the design, branding, and layout of the new Best Practices database.
Strong theoretical and practical background in graphic design, including the use of design/publishing software tools such as Adobe Design Premium, In-Design, CorelDraw, web design tools such as Dreamweaver and Flash will be essential.
This will ensure the implementation and adherence to existing graphics guidelines, layouts of new Platform, development of new graphics solutions and design of innovative infographics products.
The UN-Habitat Best Practices internship is for 3 months with a possibility for extension depending on the needs of the Organization.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the Supervision of Programme Officer, the intern will:
Contribute to copy-editing of texts and modification/creation of visual content and materials based on developed/approved templates.
Assist the Best Practices Team to identify, review and compile over 5,500 best practices, that have been migrated and will be hosted on the Platform to inspire and accelerate implementation of the NUA.
Contribute to maintaining, managing and expanding the Platform Best Practices for online dissemination.
Administer and coordinate tasks and responsibilities adjusted by supervisor

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).
Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred Area of Studies:
Undergraduate/Post Graduate in online content management/graphics design/digital communications.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required.
Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
