The Uganda Cancer Institute together with support from Pfizer are implementing a project titled“Improving breast cancer care coordination in Uganda: an apprenticeship program for primary care providers and patient navigators (IBCCC project)”
The goal of the project is to strengthen breast cancer care coordination in Uganda through training primary care providers and community patient navigators; to improve
effectiveness and efficiency of multidisciplinary care, referral pathway, and access to treatment, follow-up care and resource utilization.
The project aims are;
Train primary care providers from five regional Hospitals to facilitate early diagnosis, initial surgical treatment, timely referral and follow-up care to patients with breast cancer;
Train community patient navigators across Uganda to expand access to breast cancer screening, awareness, timely referral, treatment compliance, and provision of psychosocial support, so as to reduce patient delay;
Conduct outreaches to women living in hard-to-reach communities and deliver educational community-based talks to mobilize community participation in breast cancer screening, and early detection, so as to downstage the proportion of women presenting with advanced breast cancer;
Co-ordinate multi-disciplinary breast cancer tumour board meetings with primary care providers to increase care coordination and effective resource utilization between UCI and regional hospitals, thereby consolidating trainees’ experiences in decision making, clinical judgement and accountability regarding care for women with breast cancer in Uganda.

Roles and Responsibilities
Roles Description
Project and Budget Management (60%)
Contribute to design of the project implementation plan
Develop communication strategies for
community activities
Coordinate training activities for health-care workers and patient navigators
Coordinate multi-disciplinary breast cancer tumour boards at the UCI
Manage expenses, budgets and finance reports
Coordinate project meetings in discussion with the principal investigator
Contribute towards 6 monthly reports to the sponsor
Research Activities (30%)
Contribute towards design and review data collection tools
Basic statistical analysis, and reporting
Manage study data to ensure quality
Coordinate research meetings
Prepare and Coordinate IRB ethics applications
Quality Assurance (10%)
Coordinate project staff and monitor quality output
Contribute towards project research SOPs
Training project staff in SOPs
Monitoring compliance with project procedures
Overseeing reports from other project staff
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Degree: MB.ChB,Nursing or any other health related qualification
Professional Registration: UMDPC or equivalent
At least 2 years’ research project related experience
HSP and GCP training
Interests: Clinical Oncology
