Position SummaryThe Legal Assistant will support in the provision of direct legal support to forced migrants and
carry out policy advocacy.
Key Performance AreasLegal aidSupport in the provision of legal advice to forced migrants
Participate in the identification and in making referrals for the resettlement of clients as per established procedure
Facilitate Alternative Dispute Resolution among conflicting parties
Participate in Legal aid clinics by providing on-spot legal aid services
Support and report on court watch briefs in collaboration with ODPP
Research and Advocacy
Actively participate in research, documentation, and publication on issues of Access to Justice as they relate to forced migrants and forced migration
Support in the preparation of legal opinions and advice on general issues of forced migration that may arise from time to time
Participate in conducting trainings for government duty bearers and forced migrants
Participate in the development of information, education and communication materials relating to access to justice matters
Networking
Organize and facilitate information sessions and dialogues with forced migrants and other stakeholders
Support in coordinating networking with other stakeholders in the provision of legal aid,
including but not limited to Government institutions, UNCHR, among others
Support in initiation, review and advice on MOUs between RLP and other partner organisations.
Fundraising and donor relations support
Support the Programme Manager in developing technical narratives for purposes of fundraising, as required
Participate in identifying new lines of intervention that facilitate fundraising.
Submit reports and accountability within the stipulated time frame
Documentation
Update all online and offline data-capturing tools
Maintain up-to-date
databases of partner’s profiles
Draft activity progress, monthly, quarterly and annual reports in the agreed timeframe.
Job Requirements
• Bachelor’s Degree in Law from a recognised university
• Experience in representing clients before any quasi-judicial or other governing bodies
• Experience in engaging with key partners on legal-related issues
• Knowledge of Kiswahili and/or any other language spoken in refugee communities will be an added advantage
• Ability to operationalise legal assignments;
• Ability to give timely reports on activities undertaken;
• Ability to work under pressure with minimum supervision;
• Creative and innovative skills;
• Great interpersonal skills and high level of self-motivation;
• Excellent skills in MS Office applications and good communication and presentation skills;
• Possession of a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice will be an added advantage
