Position Summary

The Gender and SRHR Assistant will be required to work with individuals, couples and households
experiencing personal difficulties, particularly due to experiences of violence, to help them access appropriate support needed to overcome their problems.

Key Performance Areas

Direct client support

  • Carry out screening/profiling of forced migrants and first-instance referrals for
    necessary support

  • Explain to clients the relevant internal procedures as well as client obligations regarding; the nature and scope of specific interventions, benefits of disclosure of information necessary to determine the intervention, etc

  • Collect additional client data through interviews, case history, psychological tests,
    and/or observational techniques; evaluate data to identify causes of problems and determine the proper therapeutic approach or referral to other specialists.

  • Provide counselling and psychosocial support to clients

  • Provide support during proactive community-based screening/profiling for experiences of violence amongst refugees in the settlement.

  • Assist during individual & Household preparatory counselling & follow-up visits before
    and after the repair is conducted

  • Assist in the provision of post-rehabilitation support, documentation and profiling of rehabilitated victims

  • Make internal referrals within RLP for any refugee clients within the settlement with cases in court requiring representation and follow-ups at police posts and other issues

  • Assist during Mediations in which the Refugee Law Project is involved in the settlement

  • Assist in the monitoring of detention palaces in which refugees from the settlement are held

  • Assist in the training of paralegals and community interpreters

  • Assist in supporting internship students assigned to the settlement on Experiential Learning

    Documentation and Records management

  • Ensure that all clients’ data, as well as records of any subsequent assessments and support offered, is captured in a manner that ensures full confidentiality and allows the compilation of accurate records of issues encountered and support offered.

  • Document the client’s testimonies and submit them to the Gender and SRHR Officer

    Reporting

  • Prepare timely intervention reports, including maintaining and updating the database of all managed clients.

  • Share monthly reports with your supervisor for monthly upload

    Capacity Building

  • Provide support during capacity building of Police officers, Prisons Officers, UPDF
    officers placed in or providing security to the settlements, local leaders and
    Refugee Welfare councils

  • Assist in the distribution of a User guide on Refugee rights and protection for field officers

    Awareness Raising

  • Community mobilisation for participation in screening/profiling processes and any other RLP activities

  • Support the Gender and SRHR Officer in carrying out regular community dialogues for the refugees in the settlement and host communities around the settlement

  • Assist in the training of Community Interpreters

  • Support in commemoration of major international days

    Empowerment

  • Assist in carrying out awareness-raising sessions as planned

  • Assist in mentorship and capacity Building of Support Groups in the settlement

  • Assist in supporting RLP’s participation in the commemoration of International Events in the settlement

  • Assist in carrying out dissemination of IEC Materials

    Job Requirements

    • A diploma in Social Work and Social Administration, Social Sciences, Community Psychology or any related field.

    • Minimum of one year of professional experience in providing counselling support to the disadvantaged

    • Strong written and spoken English

    • Comfortable working in environments with little basic infrastructure

    • Strong listening skills

    • Sensitivity and empathy

    • Patience and a calm manner

    • Ability to cope with emotional situations

    • Ability to relate to a wide range of people

    • Self-motivated, versatile and adaptable to different cultures and people

    • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, in particular, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

    • Knowledge of any language spoken in refugee communities will be an added advantage
