Swiss Church Aid(HEKS/EPER) is the aid organization of the Protestant Churches of Switzerland and has its headquarters in Zurich/Switzerland. Swiss Church Aid(HEKS/EPER) implements development and humanitarian responses programs to tackles the causes of hunger, injustice, and social deprivation both in Switzerland and abroad and runs around 200 projects world-wide.

In Ethiopia, Swiss Church Aid(HEKS/EPER) implements development and humanitarian interventions with focus on natural resource management, climate change adaption, conflict transformation, water, hygiene & sanitation, and inclusive markets.

Swiss Church Aid(HEKS/EPER) is looking for a committed and competent Conflict Transformation Officer for its ‘Women for Peace’ which aims at strengthening local capacities to improve communities’ resilience in border areas between Borana (Ethiopia) and Marsabit (Kenya).

The project aims to enhance women’s leverage in conflict prevention, resolution, peace building, relief and recovery. The position holder will report to field office coordinator and will work closely with the project team in the field and in Addis as well as with partner organizations in Ethiopia and Kenya.

Job Description

Key areas of responsibilities are

  • Carry out and facilitate the day-to-day planning, implementation, and monitoring of project activities at woreda and kebele level.

  • Work with the local institutions, project team and government counterparts to achieve the project outputs/outcomes.

  • Ensure adequate consultation and participation of district and kebele level stakeholders throughout the project cycles such as in project planning, implementation, and monitoring of the activities.

  • Facilitate various kebele level community meetings, regular meetings both at woreda and community levels.
  • Support and engage community in various WASH and cash distribution activities, as per the project plans and schedules.

  • Take part in the assessments and surveys of WASH, alternative livelihood options, conflict sensitivity within the project operational area for project planning and management, apply DO NO HARM approaches and maximize benefits of the project for the intended beneficiaries.

  • Ensure transparent and legitimate beneficiaries’ selection is conducted at community level with utmost participation of stakeholders in the woreda.
  • Acquire accurate information about selected beneficiaries’ families, their
    problems, needs and capabilities.

  • Act as facilitator to promote self-help and other social groups in the community.
  • Prepare and develop periodic reports and weekly progress updates in standard and quality manner.
  • Ensure proper recording and documentation of best practices, lessons, and success stories.
    Ensure the project activities are implemented according to project work-plan.

  • Respecting code of conduct, organizational policies, and guidelines.
  • Conduct other duties as may be assigned by country office filed office coordinator, and country Office WASH team, NRM & Livelihood Officers.

  • Represent Swiss Church Aid (HEKS/EPER) at woreda level at various forums, including providing updates and project reports, information, plans and other relevant topics.

    Contract: fixed basis for 7 months

    Job Requirements

    Education, Qualifications & Other knowledge

  • BSc or Diploma in Natural Resources Management, Food Security and Livelihoods, Dry land agriculture, Rural Development, Sociology, and other related social sciences.

  • 5 years of work experience for diploma holders and 2 years of work experience for degree holders in integrated emergency food security and livelihoods, WASH, Peace building, and NRM projects in lowland areas.

  • Experience and understanding of Borana OMO pastoral areas, context, livelihoods, and culture.

  • Experience of working with local community and customary institutions at grassroots level.

  • Having a motor bike driving license is advantageous.

  • Willingness to reside in rural/marginal areas, ability to work with minimum supervision.

  • Very good English and Local language skills (written and spoken).

  • Computer literacy, excellent record keeping and report writing

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    Good community level facilitation and coordination skills.

  • Strong sense of integrity and personal commitment to the goals and values of Swiss Church Aid (HEKS/EPER)
