About the Role

  • The Behavior Change and Communications Officer (BCCO) will support the development, planning and management of content and partnerships for the StrongMinds Uganda (SMU) Communications campaign.

  • The BCCO will offer technical support in behavior change communication assessments using qualitative methods working closely with the programme team leaders and other partners including the Ministry of Health.

  • She / he will document the process, issues, challenges, and recommendations for improvements / scaling up social and human behavior change mental health sector interventions.

    Responsibilities

  • Provides technical assistance in the development and implementation of rigorous social and behavior change communication strategies and materials (print and audio visual) through design, media and materials production, and evaluation.

  • Provides technical leadership and design expertise in print and material development based on rigorous application of Social and Behavior Change Communication principles and current best practices.

  • Completes detailed strategy write-ups, work plans, creative briefs and delivers quarterly reports including reviewing reports and deliverables from partners and all other reporting requirements.

  • Work in partnership with MoH Risk Communications Pillar and other partners to develop and disseminate share graphics on partner websites, and social media channels
    Oversees the work of consultants and subcontractors, as required; Graphics designer, illustrator, producers, videographers etc
    Work with the programmes, M&E department, and Media analytics to inventory all social and behavior change communication materials on mental health and depression

  • Maintain an up to date data base of voice, visual and social media materials produced for the campaign.

  • Develop behavior change communication and community engagement strategies, knowledge base information, education and communication (IEC) materials.

  • Collect information within and outside the organization that will be used in communicating news, lessons learned, best practices, and research findings to SM,

  • Turn complex research and data into clear, compelling stories. Strong English writing skills are essential

  • Write and publish communications materials such as press articles, brochures, slide presentations, event materials, email newsletters, reports, briefs and factsheets in clear and jargon-free language, then make sure they reach the right audiences

  • Work with the Executive Assistant to develop and publish content for social media accounts

  • Document the process, issues, challenges and recommendations for improvements / scaling up IEC / BCC and community mobilization interventions in the priority regions
    / districts.

  • Provide expertise in social science methods for monitoring and evaluation of BCC, community mobilization and advocacy including specific components working with our target populations.
    Ensure timely effective communications within the organization and with stakeholders at all level.

  • Establish effective relationships with partners, donor and communities
    Create and manage our content publishing calendar

  • Write blog posts, take photos, post content to social media, and ensure that our reputation is represented to the highest standard
    Write and edit animation scripts

    Job Requirements

    Required Qualifications, Experience and Skills

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Humanities like social sciences, development studies, communications, health promotion and education, public health, behavioral change communication, strategic communication, journalism, public relations, marketing or related field.

  • A Diploma / training in mass communication or journalism is required or an equivalent.
    A certificate in Social Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) is preferred

  • A master’s degree in public health is an added advantage. Experience backed with evidence-based theory and research aimed at addressing public health sector behaviors changes at individual, community, and societal levels.

  • Experience in designing, implementing and evaluation of SBCC strategies will be an added advantage.

  • Excellent writing, oral and visual presentation skills, training skills. Ability to assess priorities and competently complete a variety of activities with a high level of accuracy and timeliness.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to initiate and implement activities with minimal oversight and supervision.

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel etc.) and the Internet.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal and negotiation skills and experience working in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, partners, donors and NGOs.

  • Ability to set priorities while multi-tasking and meet deadlines.

  • Proven ability to work as an effective team member.
